What to see and do

For culture buffs, the Cidade Velha is a must-see in Faro. The ambience of this old town is relaxed and calm. The architecture of the 18th century building is just stunning. A stone’s throw away, the Se has evolved from a former temple to a cathedral to a mosque and now, finally a museum. Head up to the roof to catch a stunning panoramic view of the city. For a unique experience, the Igreja do Carmo church is a bone and skull chapel that is a definite must-see. Visit the Archaeological Museum to see its stunning collection of artefacts from the Roman era and of course, its lovely Roman mosaic floor.

For the adventurous, consider going quad biking! Explore the amazing views of the countryside amid the mountains while having a ball at the same time. Alternatively, hire a car and spend the rest of the day driving along the Algarve coast to the nearby city of Tavira. If you have the time, do consider travelling to Milreu to explore the ruins of the Roman empire. Step back in time and discover how royalty spent their days at the luxurious rural villa.

Head to Café do Coreto, a restaurant on the waterfront for a great view of the marina. The restaurant offers a wide range of authentic Portuguese meals at reasonable prices. For a great night out, head to a busy tavern in the old town and end your day with a few well-deserved drinks!

How to get around within the city

Within the city, hop onto the tourist train. It is a fantastic way to travel around the town and allows visitors to get a feel for an area. The best way to explore the city is of course on foot. It is also enjoyable to stroll down the streets and stop at your convenience. Avoid hiring a car to explore this city because there is usually insufficient space to park your car and some of the streets are too narrow to pass through.
