Discover Faro
Faro is a popular destination for people wanting to escape the cold in northern Europe and the UK for some sun. Faro is said to have more than 300 days of sunshine a year! People usually use this city as a base for exploring some of the more remote areas of the Algarve region. The city of Faro has a reputation for being an overrun party beach town. A haven for people wanting to relax while sipping on expensive cocktails and enjoying the party scene. The architecture of the city with Iberian and Moorish-inspired styles is a treat for visitors to this stunning island. From dramatic golden coastlines to protected nature reserves and historical monuments and some of the best recreational facilities in Western Europe, this destination should be on everyone’s itinerary.
What to see and do
For culture buffs, the Cidade Velha is a must-see in Faro. The ambience of this old town is relaxed and calm. The architecture of the 18th century building is just stunning. A stone’s throw away, the Se has evolved from a former temple to a cathedral to a mosque and now, finally a museum. Head up to the roof to catch a stunning panoramic view of the city. For a unique experience, the Igreja do Carmo church is a bone and skull chapel that is a definite must-see. Visit the Archaeological Museum to see its stunning collection of artefacts from the Roman era and of course, its lovely Roman mosaic floor.
For the adventurous, consider going quad biking! Explore the amazing views of the countryside amid the mountains while having a ball at the same time. Alternatively, hire a car and spend the rest of the day driving along the Algarve coast to the nearby city of Tavira. If you have the time, do consider travelling to Milreu to explore the ruins of the Roman empire. Step back in time and discover how royalty spent their days at the luxurious rural villa.

How to get around within the city
Within the city, hop onto the tourist train. It is a fantastic way to travel around the town and allows visitors to get a feel for an area. The best way to explore the city is of course on foot. It is also enjoyable to stroll down the streets and stop at your convenience. Avoid hiring a car to explore this city because there is usually insufficient space to park your car and some of the streets are too narrow to pass through.
