Girona-Costa Brava Airport is the second most important airport in the Barcelona area. Located in the town of Vilobi d’Onyar, it is 7.8 miles from the city centre of Girona and 57 miles away from Barcelona city. The airport is also close to Costa Brava and the Pyrenees.

Inaugurated in 1965, the airport used to have a low passenger number every year -- just an average of 275,000 had been registered every year until the entrance of the Irish airline Ryanair. From 2002 to 2008, the number of passengers increased ten times to more than 6 million.

How to get around

There are 3 main modes of travel between Girona-Costa Brava Airport and Girona or Barcelona: by bus, train or rented car. If you are travelling in a group and plan to move around the Catalan coast, it might be best to rent a car. There are a few car hire companies situated at the airport such as Hertz, Goldcar Rental, Enterprise Atesa and Europcar. Ryanair buses depart from the airport to Barcelona and Girona bus station regularly.

What to see and do

One of the most interesting cities in Catalonia with a 2,000 year old history, Girona is a walled city with historic buildings, museums, streets and squares.

The Forca Vella is where many of the buildings are congregated. Located within this area is the Jewish Quarter or Call, a labyrinth of narrow streets and patios that has maintained its medieval atmosphere. It is one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in the world. The Cathedral is an icon of this city, with the widest Gothic nave in Europe. Girona has seven museums – among them are the Art Museum, the Museum of Jewish History and the Girona History Museum. Get a dose of culture by visiting them.

The city is known for its outstanding gastronomy. It has Michelin-starred restaurants that includes El Celler de Can Roca, proclaimed the Best Restaurant in the World by Restaurant Magazine. Some local products that you will want to try, or buy as souvenirs, are Xuixo pastries, sweet botifarra sausage (fresh or cured), cured meats, wild mushrooms, chocolates inspired by the legends of the city and Emporda wines and cavas.

There are various ways to get around the city of Girona. The city is small enough to walk or cycle around. As Girona is located at the confluence of four rivers, you might want to take advantage of this by kayaking along the River Ter. You could also go up in an air balloon to enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

Art lovers would not want to miss the Dali Museum, located in Figueres, in Girona province. The museum was designed by Dali himself in the last years of his life. The outside walls have small sculptures of bread buns while on the top of the museum, you’ll see golden mannequins and giant eggs.

Given the proximity to Barcelona, it would be a pity to bypass this beautiful city with landmarks such the Sagrada Familia, Antonio Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece. Stroll through the Las Ramblas to shop and enjoy the lively nightlife and pay a visit to Park Guell, a garden complex with architectural elements designed by Gaudi.
