Hamburg – Holidays in Germany’s Largest Port City

The second most important city in Germany after Berlin, Hamburg is a charming city located at the crown of the elongated funnel shaped inlet of the River Elbe. Port of Hamburg is the most important area in the city. Serving as Germany’s cultural and commercial center, Hamburg is the 8^th largest city in European Union and thirteenth largest German state. At an elevation of Spreading on a land area of 755 km², the city is home to more than 1.7 million people. Located on the confluence of River Alster and Bille, Hamburg is bounded by Continental Europe in the south, Scandinavia in North, North Sea in west and Baltic Sea in north east.  Historically the city was an important member of medieval Hanseatic League and served as a completely sovereign state before the unification of Germany. A major transport hub and one of the most prosperous cities in Europe, Hamburg also serves as major financial capital and is home to Berenberg Bank, the world's second oldest bank. The city ranked 16^th in the list of livability index of 2015 and German is the official language spoken by the majority of people.

Hamburg Airport is the major airport serving the city and all flights coming to Hamburg land at this airport. This is the oldest operational airport in Germany and is located just 8 km away from the city. Hamburg-Finkenwerder is the second airport serving Hamburg and is 10 km from the city center. The city is dominated by oceanic type of climate which is categorized by warm summers and very cold winters. During the summer months, the average temperature ranges between 20.1 to 22.5 °C and during the winter months it is between −0.3 to 1.0 °C. While June, July and August are the warmest months of the year, December, January and February are the coldest. The months from May to September are the peak tourist season; hence it is advisable that you book your hotel much in advance. Winter months from January to March are best avoided due to freezing temperatures. Shoulder tourist season lasts from October till December. Hamburg Dom in November-December, Duckstein Festival between July-August, Christmas Markets in December and Romantic Nights held between July and August are some of the major festival celebrated in the city.

City Attractions

Speicherstadt, which is simply known as City of Warehouse, is the prime attraction and World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO. This is the largest warehouse district in the world and was a free zone to transfer goods without paying customs. The Port of Hamburg is another significant draw famed for housing some of the best city attractions. Extending on an area of 100 square kilometers houses Köhlbrandbrücke and Warehouse District, tourists can enjoy a boat ride to reach the attraction. Kunsthalle Hamburg is Germany’s top art gallery. Hamburg Rathaus is a massive Neo-Renaissance building. St. Michael's Church (a church displaying Baroque style of architecture) is the most famous church in the city.

Eating and Shopping

Hamburg is one of the oldest harbor towns in the Germany and the sapid cuisine of the city is testimony to the diverse culture that co exists in the city. The local cuisine incorporate extensive use of fishes along with fresh fruits and vegetable and some of the main dishes which tourists should sample here are - Birnen, Bohnen und Speck, Aalsuppe, Alsterwasser, Franzbrötchen,  streusel. The city is also known for brewing the best beer and Holsten Brewery and the Gröninger brewery are the two major breweries in Hamburg. If you want to go shopping in Hamburg, then visit Mönckebergstraße. Located at the center of the city, it is also a popular shopping district. While Europa Passage is a newly build shopping mall in Hambur, Schanzenviertel is very popular for its unique designer boutiques. If you do not wish to spend too much money then visit the shops near town hall square or explore the 'Second Hand’ shops at Hot Dogs Marktstrasse, the New and second hand Kleidermarkt and Vintage and Rags in Mönckebergstraße.
