Take a domestic flight to Allahabad Airport, which is only 12 kilometres from the city centre. Built in 1919, the terminal remains humble without employing much technology that the other airports have used. Its small area of 1 acre also has a passenger handling capability of only 65 for both arriving and departing passengers. With flights only to and from Delhi and Mumbai, it is advisable to take a connecting flight to Allahabad if you come from far away, or use the intercity buses and trains if you live just a city or two next to Allahabad. Upgrading plans, though, are underway to improve Allahabad Airport’s desirability and to take up more operations in the airport, since Allahabad is one of the major cities of Uttar Pradesh and also has significant potential to enhance religious tourism.

Tourists can get to the city centre quickly by flagging a taxi or an auto rickshaw from the arrival hall entrance like many of the other Indian Airports. If you are travelling between November and March, why not hop on an auto rickshaw since it is cooler. Your experience will also be much more authentic without a glass window to separate you and your surroundings. Be sure to agree on an amount with the driver before embarking on your trip to prevent disagreements. Once in the city, the same modes of transport (taxi and auto rickshaw) are also the more commonly used methods of getting around.

What to See and Do

More commonly recognised as Prayag, Allahabad is one of India's most holy cities. It also contains legacies from India’s colonial history such as the Muir College and the All Saints Cathedral.

Visitors to Allahabad should take a trip to Triveni Sangam, the holiest point in Allahabad, at the confluence of the three holiest rivers in Hindu mythology – the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswathi Rivers. Triveni Sangam is believed to be the spot where the drops of holy nectar fell, and Hindus believe that a wash here at the sanctifying point is believed to free one of all sins.

Go for an adventure around Allahabad Fort that stands on the northern banks of the Yamuna river. Emperor Akbar commissioned this magnificently designed fort in the year 1583. Inside the fort, there is the underground temple Patalpuri and within it is the much-revered Akshaya Vat or immortal tree. Interested in history? Allahabad Museum is one of the best-kept museums in India and the specialty of this museum lies in the fact that it has separate galleries devoted to archaeological findings, natural history exhibits, art gallery and artefacts donated by Jawaharlal Nehru. It also has a good collection of sculptures from the Gupta period.

The ancestral home of the Nehru family, Anand Bhawan, is also found in Allahabad. Today, it has been turned into a museum displaying the memorabilia of the family. The city also has nice parks like the Chandra Shekhar Azad Park which houses fine colonial buildings including the public library.
