Discover Agra

Agra Airport, also known as Kheria Airport, is a public airport serving the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. The airport doubles up as a military airbase, and is one of the biggest airbases of the Indian Air Force. Carriers like Air India serve Agra Airport, operating flights to domestic destinations like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and more. At present, about 35 domestic flights depart from Agra Airport weekly.

Getting Around

The airport is only 5 kilometres away from downtown Agra. The main mode of transport from Agra Airport to the city centre is by taxi. When exiting the terminal, travellers can locate the taxi ranks from which they can hire a cab. Apart from taxi, visitors can rent a car to reach the city and its various tourist attractions. Although there are no public or private bus services available between the airport and Agra city centre, certain upmarket hotels do offer complimentary pre-arranged shuttle pick-ups for their guests.

Within Agra, getting around is easy with various forms of transport. Take the tongas, electric buses and electric tempos to your destination. Auto- or manual rickshaws are also readily available in the city. Generally, pulled rickshaws charge less for the same distance, compared to auto rickshaws. Ensure that fares are agreed upon before boarding, and that passengers bargain to avoid being ripped off. Otherwise, take an air-conditioned taxi for greater comfort while travelling.

What to See and Do

There is much to see in Agra – the city is home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites, namely the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. Visit the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The majestic structure was built as a memorial for Emperor Shah Jahan’s third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died while giving birth to their 14th child in 1631. The exquisitely designed Taj Mahal leaves visitors awestruck by its sheer beauty. Be captivated by the elegant white marble screens and pietra dura, which is marble inlay work, crafted with thousands of semi-precious stones. Marvel at the Taj’s stunning silhouette against the clear sky.

In the light of the Taj’s breathtaking grandeur, one easily overlooks the almost equally impressive Agra Fort. One of India’s finest Mughal forts, the Agra Fort is a must-visit when in the city. The colossal red-sandstone fort is more like a walled city; inside, explore the labyrinth of buildings, extensive underground sections, the open Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audiences), the magnificent Shish Mahal (Mirror Palace), and view the grand Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque). The only point of entry is the Amar Singh Gates, past the previously crocodile-infested but now dry moat surrounding the structure.

Explore Fatehpur Sikri, a city in the Agra district of the Uttar Pradesh state in India. Built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century, Fatehpur Sikri is one of the most well-preserved examples of Indian Mughal architecture in the country. The fortified ancient city was the short-lived capital of the Mughal empire.
