The Amsterdam International Airport (also known as Schiphol Airport) is ranked one of Europe’s busiest, accommodating about 50 million passengers a year. Serving the city of Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, Schiphol Airport is the home base of many large European airlines such as Dutch Airlines, KLM and Transavia. With 4 separate terminals and an underground rail station with a 24-hour train service, the airport is truly a transport hub.

Getting around

Getting to the city from the airport is easy, as affordable airport trains directly connect passengers to the Amsterdam train station and run every 10-15 minutes. Buses are also available every half an hour or so outside the arrival terminal, but offer limited services over the weekends. Alternatively, passengers can book Schiphol Hotel shuttles to bring them right to their accommodation at a slightly steeper price.

Once in Amsterdam, getting around is even easier. The city is served by a very efficient and extensive public transportation system that includes trains, buses, trams, metros and ferries, almost all of which can be paid for using the OV-chipkaart, which can be bought in hourly, daily or unlimited forms.

What to see and do

Amsterdam is known for its beautiful scenery – be sure to check out the iconic windmills, take a boat cruise along the city’s many canals (Amsterdam is known as the ‘Venice of the North’), or enjoy al fresco dining in Dam Square right in the heart of Amsterdam, which served as the reception area for Napoleon and his troops during their takeover of the city in 1808.

For art and history lovers, this city is really the place to be. With countless museums of extremely diverse themes, there’s no lack of amazing artefacts for you to see. Don’t miss the most famous of them all: the biographical museum Anne Frank House, to gain an understanding of how a young girl’s innocence and precocious intelligence managed to withstand the horrors of the Holocaust. Then go over to the Rembrandt House Museum to visit the place where world-famous Dutch painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn – one of the greatest contributors to European art – once lived and painted in. There’s even something for the shopaholics: the Museum of Bags and Purses, one of the world’s largest collections of historic purses, suitcases and handbags. And that’s just naming a few; other big-name museums include the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, the Verzetsmuseum and more.

On top of that, Amsterdam is also bursting with gorgeous old buildings. Feast your eyes on architectural brilliance at the Begijnhof, an old béguinage court surrounded by a group of ancient buildings that served as dwellings for the community of Beguines (religious women who were under similar but less binding vows as nuns). There, spot the classic tall Amsterdam-style townhouses, one of the few remaining old wooden houses in Amsterdam, and imposing old gates that have originated from the early 1900s.
