Cologne – Germany’s Audacious Delight

Ideally located on the banks of Rhine River, Cologne is Germany's 4th largest city after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. The city is home to more than 10 million inhabitants, making it one of the major European metropolitan areas. Located less than 8 km from Belgium, Cologne was founded in 38 BC, but came to limelight only during 1st century AD, by the Roman Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. In the past the city has served as capital of Germania Inferior of the Roman province, leading members of the Hanseatic League and during the medieval and Renaissance times it was the largest cities north of the Alps. During the Second World War, it was the most heavily-bombed cities in Germany and more than 34,711 long tons of bombs were dropped by RAF, thus destroying most of the city's historic buildings. A major cultural center for Rhineland, the city boasts of housing more than 30 museums and galleries. German is the official language spoken by majority of people, but English is also spoken and understood.
