Discover Dehradun

Dehradun Airport – interestingly also known as Jolly Grant Airport – serves Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand. A state in Northern India, Uttarakhand is sometimes known as ‘Dev Bhumi’ – Land of God – as many temples and buildings of religious significance as well as places of worship are located there, making it one of India’s most sacred regions of religious devotion as well as a popular pilgrimage location. Located 20-30km east of the city of Dehradun, Jolly Grant Airport is small and cosy, consisting of only one airport terminal and a short runway. It only offers domestic flights to a handful of Indian cities; these include the likes of Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Lucknow and Thiruvananthapuram. However, with Dehradun becoming one of the fastest growing cities in India and most popular tourist destinations, plans to upgrade the Jolly Grant Airport are underway.

Getting around

Your best bet for getting to Dehradun city from Jolly Grant Airport is pre-booking a taxi or shuttle service. Certain companies offer a shared-ride shuttle service that coordinates various passengers’ destinations and brings them there with multiple stops. (One such company is Mozio; check out www.mozio.com for more information). Some hotels also offer airport transfers; make sure to enquire with your chosen hotel when you book.

For faster, more convenient (but more expensive) transportation, book a taxi or grab one at the taxi service outside the arrival hall. Do note that Dehradun taxis only accept cash payment.

If you prefer greater flexibility, car hire is also available at the airport.

What to see and do

Dehradun is one of the most picturesque cities in India; it has the sacred Ganges river flowing to its east, and the Yamuna river to its west. Besides being flanked by two of India’s largest rivers, it also sits in the Doon Valley at the foothills of the Himalayas – you can expect gorgeous mountain and river views as well as an abundance of fresh air. Besides its stunning natural beauty and pleasant, mild climate, Dehradun is also known for housing some of the most prestigious education institutes of India, as well as beautiful national parks.

If you’re looking for a more relaxing, tranquil vacation, the Jolly Grant Airport is only a short distance away from the holy city of Rishikesh, an extremely popular tourist destination also known as the gateway to the Himalayas. The birthplace of yoga, Rishikesh is surrounded by hills and sits on the banks of the Ganges river. In local legend, Rishikesh was the location where Rishi Raibhya engaged in hard meditation and penance, before being rewarded by seeing Lord Vishnu.

Today, Rishikesh boasts a large number of temples, ashrams, shrines and yoga institutes, and is a must-go for those seeking spiritual peace amidst nature. A popular pilgrimage location, it is also a good place for one to acquire more in-depth knowledge about Hinduism. Legend has it that meditation in sacred Rishikesh leads to spiritual salvation, but even for the non-religious it is easy to relax and unwind in such idyllic settings, surrounded by hills and water.
