The history of the city reveals that it was under the rule of French and during that time, Hanoi was the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. After the French left the country, Hanoi served as the capital of North Vietnam, and also became the capital of a reunified Vietnam in 1976, after the North's victory in the Vietnam War. The city is sprawling on an area of 3,345 km2 and is 120 km west of Hai Phong city. The city is one of the fastest growing cities in Vietnam and ranked 39 by Emporis in the list of world cities with most skyscrapers over 100 m. Vietnamese is the official language spoken by the majority of people.

Enjoy the unique water puppetry at the Water Puppetry Theatre. HO Chi Min Mausoleum is the final resting place of Ho Chi Minh the country’s greatest leader who was lovingly called as ‘Uncle Ho’. His preserved body is now laid to rest in a glass case in the Ba Dinh area of Hanoi and is a must visit attraction. A dramatic Buddhist temple complex built in the 15th century, the Perfume Pagoda is famous for its unique location which has been built into a mountain range in a maze of alleyways carved into the rock and is surrounded by rich forests and flowing streams.

A popular spot for a leisure evening, Hoan Kiem Lake is a beautiful lake within the city and the Ngoc Son temples sits on a small island in the center of the lake. A bridge connects the temple to the lake and this place is a photographer’s delight. Hanoi Old Quarter (packed with numerous colonial architecture), Dong Xuan Market (largest market in Hanoi), Hanoi Opera House (one of the most stunning buildings in the city), Temple of Literature (a charming temple complex in the center of Hanoi) and Ba Vi National Park are some of the major attractions that the city is famous for.

 

Eating and Shopping

The city of Hanoi is famous for its rich culinary traditions. The people of Vietnam used the freshest produce in their food and fish and meat along with vegetables are important part of a traditional Vietnamese meal. Vietnam's national dish ‘Phở’ has been named as one of the Top 5 street foods in the world by globalpost. Phở, chả cá, bánh cuốn and cốm are some of the dishes that have been originated in the city and are a must try. While there are endless number of restaurants located within the city, most of them offer dishes containing dog, snake and insect inspired dishes. The streets of Vietnam are filled with small street stalls that serve some of the tastiest dishes.

Hang Da, Cho Hom, Dong Xuan and Night markets are some of the popular shopping destinations in Hanoi. Most of the markets remain open from 10 in the morning till 10 in the night and sell all type of stuff ranging from cheap, affordable to very good quality with a high price.
