Located in the north of Phuket island in Thailand, Phuket International Airport serves as the main gateway for the city. The city centre is approximately 32km away from the airport. Since the city is renowned as a major tourist destination, Phuket International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the country. Two terminals make up the airport premises, dividing traffic into international flights and domestic flights respectively. However, a third terminal has been added recently to cater to charter flights as well. Within the airport, a vast array of amenities and services are offered to passengers passing through. They include automated Teller Machines (ATM), emergency medical services, postage services, dining options, a bookshop, souvenir and retail shops, and massage and spa services. Also, duty free shopping can be done at the airport, where local spirits are a popular buy due to its inexpensive prices. Complimentary WiFi is also available within the airport premises, allowing passengers to remain connected to their loved ones back home.

How to get around in Phuket

Transport to the city from the airport comes in the form of multiple options that travellers can choose from. Most passengers may have been offered hotel pick-ups at the airport if they had booked their accommodation prior to their arrival, but for those who do not have pre-arranged transport, fret not! From Phuket International Airport, passengers can opt for limousine taxis, which have been said to drive at faster-than-usual speeds; metered taxis, very easily spotted due to their bright colours; cost-friendly bus services; and minivans, great for group travellers or those with too much baggage, or simply rent a car for their trip.

Standard modes of public transport like bus services and taxis operate within the city. But in Phuket, one can also find the Songthaew, a type of pick-up vehicle, which is a conventional vehicle unique to the city as well.

What to see and do

Phuket is a great destination for a beach holiday. As Thailand’s largest island, tourism is the mainstay of the city due to its endless variety and warm hospitality that keeps visitors from all over the world returning to Phuket for more.

One of the city’s most famous attractions is Patong Beach. More than just a beach, Patong serves has a bustling nightlife and lots of shopping. The 3.5km long beach has many bars, restaurants and hotels lined up along its coast; and is a one-stop destination if you only have a day to spare. Alternatively, one can rent a boat and embark on an island hopping adventure as Phuket has multiple charming islands surrounding its borders. If you are lucky, you may even catch sight of a school of dolphins!

Many hotels are located near the airport to provide convenient accommodation for passengers. Most of these hotels also offer complimentary shuttle services to and fro the airport. One such option is the Dewa Phuket resort, situated just a mere five minutes’ drive away from the airport. Travellers need not drive all the way down to the city’s centre in search of rejuvenation, as this resort is strategically located near the Nai Yang Beach where one can get a tan or try out water activities. Even with limited time to spare in Phuket, travellers may gain a trip’s worth of fun just by staying in this holistic resort.
