Discover Jodhpur

Fly to Jodhpur from Mumbai or Delhi and marvel at the reasons that gave Jodhpur its nickname "Sun City" together with other tourists from around the world. Land in Jodhpur Airport, only 5 kilometres from Jodhpur Railway Station in South Jodhpur, and be amazed at both civil airplanes and military airplanes on its runway as it shares its airside with the Jodhpur Air Base of the Indian Air Force. Though there is only 1 terminal with a built-up space of 5,690 square metres, the airport is capable of handling 430 passengers per hour with its 7 check-in counters and 3 boarding gates. Currently only a domestic airport, expansion plans are on the way to make Jodhpur Airport an international one.

Arriving in Jodhpur, do not hesitate to ask about the city at the Tourist Information Counter where your queries will be met with smiles and travel tips. Be sure to take advantage of the duty-free shops around the place for a new branded bag or new scent or just have a quick meal at the airport before you embark on your travel. For those who need to stay connected, mobile phone charging facilities are available for free.

Getting Around

The only modes of transport from the airport to the city centre are taxis and auto rickshaws. Essentially the same functionally, auto rickshaws will serve as a cheaper alternative if you have less baggage and wish to have your sightseeing not covered by glass windows. Like any other part of India, be sure to set your price with the driver before getting on. Alternatively, those with driving licences can rent a car from one of the rental booths manned by enthusiastic young men willing to show their selection of rental cars.

What to see and do

Located on the foothill of a sandstone hillock, Jodhpur is one of the favourite tourist destinations in Rajasthan. An oasis in the desert of Rajasthan, it has a string of palaces, forts and temples that will keep you excited throughout your journey.

Jodhpur's attractions include Mehrangarh Fort, Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jaswant Thada and Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower). Some of these beautiful historic buildings were featured in The Dark Knight Rises and The Fall, as well as Bollywood movies like Hum Sath Sath Hain, Veer and Shuddh Desi Romance. Take a boat ride along Kaylana Lake, and watch the pretty light and water show of Shastri Circle, before having a meal of Mirchi Bada with Makhaniya Lassi. You’ll also want to try 'Jodhpur Sweets' – popular in many parts of India – here in its place of origin.

Known as the Blue City, Jodhpur’s winding streets are lined with shops and bazaars selling everything from trumpets and temple decorations to snuff and saris. Jodhpur is home to many talented and skilled craftsmen, so if you looking for a smart suit, why not consider a beautifully tailored Jodhpuri suit, to lend regality to your wardrobe.
