Discover Miami International

Miami International Airport is one of the busiest airports, due to its role as the main United States gateway for Latin America and the Caribbean. The airport serves international and domestic travellers, to and from various destinations across the globe. Presently, 35 domestic and over 50 international carriers serve Miami Airport, including American Airlines, American Eagle, British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa and plenty more.

Getting Around

The airport is approximately 8 kilometres north of downtown Miami, and more than 20 kilometres west of Miami Beach. Take a taxi to the city centre, one of the fastest and most convenient ways to get there. Otherwise, take the comprehensive Metrobus service downtown. The Metrorail also connects Miami Airport to the city centre, making it very easy to reach downtown Miami via the train.

Within Miami, getting around is easy on Metpublic transport. Board the bus to various destinations in the city; most major buses operate 24/7, inclusive of the Route S bus that sends passengers from downtown Miami to all of Miami Beach. Otherwise, take the Metrorail, a dual Green and Orange Line that takes travellers to several popular tourist attractions in Miami. A great way to travel around the city centre is by the Metromover, an elevated people mover train system serving the downtown area. View the skyscrapers and Miami skyline from up high. Alternatively, call for a taxi to get around. Generally, taxis are not allowed to stop for passengers along the streets due to safety and legal reasons; hence, calling is necessary. Another option would be to rent a car to get around downtown Miami.

What to See & Do

Miami is a surfing paradise. Be sure to visit South Beach, the surf capital of Miami. There, you will find surfers riding on the rolling waves, people suntanning on the golden sands, and rollerbladers zipping down Ocean Drive on their skates. In South Beach, the World Erotic Art Museum may draw curious visitors to its doorstep. The museum is home to a vast collection of sex toys, phallic paintings and artefacts; strangely enough, the museum is owned and curated by Naomi Wilzig, a near-octogenarian grandmother. Explore the Nikki Beach Club and Opium Garden, ideal places to chill with your friends. Have a delicious meal at Joe’s Stone Crab, famous for its signature lime pie.

Apart from lounging at the beach, make a trip to the Everglades Alligator Farm. Watch live shows starring alligators and snakes, happening every hour, on airboat tours. The farm is the habitat for over 2,000 alligators. View other marine life at the Miami Seaquarium. It is home to Lolita, the Killer Whale, and the iconic dolphin, Flipper, from the 1960s television show. Besides dolphin shows, other attractions include Salty’s Pirate Playground (Salty is a sea lion), the stingray touch pool, and friendly manatees. Children will also love Zoo Miami, a classic landmark popular with kids, parents and animal lovers. The zoo is categorised into the different parts of the world, and youngsters can observe multifarious species of animals in their “natural” habitats. Another fun family activity is taking a VIP Safari Tour of Jungle Island, where visitors get to play with lemurs in the Monkey Jungle, hold snakes from the Serpentarium, and roam the jungle freely.
