Discover Reus
The capital of Baix Camp, in the province of Tarragona, in Catalonia, Spain, Reus is a known for producing the best quality wine and spirit. Birthplace of Antoni Gaudi, the famous Spanish architect, Reus is also known for being a center for rock climbing. The city came to limelight during the time of the Phylloxera plague. Situated at an elevation of 134 meters above sea level, Reus spreads on an area of 52.71 km2 and is home to more than 106,709 people. The city was founded in the year 1150 by Robert d'Aguiló and was then known as Redis or Reddis. The city recorded exponential growth in the 18th century when it started the trade of textile and liquor. Reus became the second city of the principality of Catalonia. While the city voted to become a republic in the year 1931, Dictator Franco bombed and confiscated the city and ruled here until his death in 1975, after which the city became republic. Spanish is the official language of people and spoken by the majority of the population.
