SEATTLE INFORMATION GUIDE

Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. A coastal seaport city, it is the seat of King County in the state of Washington and also its largest city.

 

Climate: Seattle's climate is oceanic or temperate marine, with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. Winters are cool with temperatures in December being 4.8 °C. It also sees 28 annual days with lows that reach the freezing point and below it as well. Summers are sunny and warm, with August the warmest month, with an average temperature of 18.9 °C.

 

Food: Seattle’s cuisine is typical of the cuisine of the USA. It consists of the street fare like pretzels, hot dogs, burgers to exotic pastas and pizzas. You should try the caviar eggs, fish and chips, garlic fries and the Dungenss crab to eat like the locals. Also, don’t miss out on the salmon, salami, sizzlers, steaks, sandwiches and soups which make up the typical fare of the city. Culture:  Seattleis a cosmopolitan city and known for its love of music. It has many names like the Emerald City, the gateway to Alaska, the Rain city, the Jet city etc. It is famous for its many jazz nightclubs along Jackson Street, from the current Chinatown/ International District to the Central District. The growth of jazz music developed the careers of world famous musicians like Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Ernestine Anderson and others. Seattle is also the birthplace of rock musician Jimi Hendrix and the alternative rock style - grunge.

 

History and Architecture: Seattle was initially inhabited by Native Americans for at least 4,000 years before the first European settlers arrived. Arthur A. Denny and his group of travelers arrived on November 13, 1851 and named the place Seattle. This was after the Chief Si'ahl of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. Logging was Seattle's first major industry, and by the 19th century it had become a center of commercial and shipbuilding. Its iconic landmarks include the Seattle Library, the Space Needle, the EMP Museum, designed by architect Frank O. Gehry and the Rem Koolhaas-designed Seattle Central Library.

Sightseeing in Seattle: Do visit the Seattle Great Wheel, Seattle Underground Tour, Woodland Park Zoo, Seattle Aquarium, Loghouse Museum in Alki, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, the Museum of History and Industry and the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture.

 

Getting to and fro from the airport

The airport is connected to the Light Link rail and is one level down on the mezzanine. Trains arrive and depart on the platform level of the station. You can even take the Metro bus by reaching the stop from the International terminal. Private cabs and taxis are also easily available.
