NEW YORK CITY INFORMATION GUIDE
New York - USA's most densely populated area is also its cultural hub. It is home to Wall Street and is called the economic capital of world; in contrast, it is also the cultural inspiration for many, known also as the crossroads of the world.
Climate
The city’s climate is divided into four seasons - winter, summer, spring, and autumn. Winters are cold, with temperatures falling below freezing point several times. Summers are warm and gradually get to hot with humidity as high as 70% or more. Thus, the best seasons to visit this city remain spring and/or autumn. Albeit unpredictable, they offer low humidity and a pleasant temperature.
Food
Just like all other cities in the world, the population that settled in that particular city determines its cuisine. New York was first home to Italian and other European immigrants. This gave the city the famous New York-style pizza and cheesecake. Today, New York hosts at least one restaurant, hotel, or mobile vendor representing every cuisine that exists in the world. You’ll find around 4000 mobile vendors who are officially licensed by the city. Street food, whatever cuisine you prefer, shouldn’t be missed here.
Culture
Tom Wolfe, while referring to NYC, said, "Culture just seems to be in the air, like part of the weather." New York is a mini world in its own; every religion, ethnicity, caste, etc., is present here. The city gave birth to many inventions in art, music, and dance. Today, it has more than 500 art galleries, each just unique as the other; many museums; and galleries that hold some of the world’s most famous auctions.
History and Architecture
During the early 17th century, Dutch trading posts were set up in the region. The colony was captured by the British who ruled it as the Province of New York. It became the national capital under the first government. Ever since the 19th century, the city has been the largest port of entry for immigration. Though it is synonymous with skyscrapers, it has a large number of historically significant buildings as well. The Woolworth Building, the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building are twentieth century landmarks, while the Seagram Building and the Condé Nast Building are modern day marvels.
Shopping
Just like any other metro city in the world, NYC is home to both—the biggest and the cheapest shopping places. Head to Madison or Fifth Avenue for luxury shopping in style or hit the inlands for weekend flea markets. Gift shops are your best bet to find souvenirs.
Sightseeing in New York
