Discover Aurangabad

Aurangabad Airport (also known as Chikkalthana Airport) is a public airport located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India. There is only 1 gate for the domestic and international terminals, for domestic flights to/from Mumbai and Delhi and the yearly international flight to Haj for the pilgrimage. Therefore, for domestic travel, it is best to first fly to either Mumbai or Delhi and then take a connecting flight to Aurangabad. Otherwise, those who live around Aurangabad can take the intercity bus or train into the city. The airport serves about 700 passengers on a daily basis, which is close to the full capacity of the airport. Various snack bars and shops are available at the airport for a quick bite before leaving the airport. The friendly counter staff at the information counters will also be most glad to help you with any queries regarding travelling and transportation.

Located only 12 kilometres from the city centre, it is easy to get there by taking a taxi or an auto rickshaw, similar to many other Indian airports. The journey will take less than 20 minutes, so if you do not have much luggage, do try the auto rickshaw if you do not take it regularly back in your city. Taking in the sights and sounds without being separated by a glass window may prove to be a more exhilarating experience in a new city!

Aurangabad (meaning "Built by the Throne") is named after the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The city is a tourism hub, surrounded by many historical monuments, including the Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as Bibi Ka Maqbara. Aurangabad is also known as the "City of Gates", as it used to have 52 "gates", each of which had a local history or had individuals linked with it. However, only four main and nine subordinate gates have survived, the most famous, oldest and biggest of them being the Bhadkal Gate near the Naukhanda Palace of Nizams. If you pass by these gates, do not hesitate to get off your ride and snap some pictures while learning about the history of the gates.

The Bibi Ka Maqbara is the burial place of Emperor Aurangzeb's wife, Dilras Banu Begum also known as Rabia-ud-Daurani. It is an imitation of the Taj Mahal at Agra and due to its similar design, it is popularly known as the "Taj of the Deccan". Also, a 17th century built powerful mill with an artificial waterfall that powers it is an attraction nearby. Explore the Aurangabad Caves with 12 Buddhist caves nestled within dating back to 3 A.D. where the iconography and architectural designs of the caves will leave you impressed.

The local cuisine is a blend of Mughlai and Hyderabadi cuisine, with an influence of the spices and herbs of the Marathwada region. Naan Qalia is a dish that is associated with Aurangabad in India and is a concoction of mutton and a variety of spices – a must-try for meat lovers.
