Discover Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura Airport - the name loosely meaning strong winds in Spanish - serves the island of Fuerteventura, the second largest of the Canary Islands (a Spanish archipelago situated in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of Africa). The airport is located about 5 kilometres from Puerto del Rosario, the capital city of Fuerteventura island, and serves both domestic and international flights to a great many cities in Europe including Málaga, Düsseldorf, Luxembourg, Zurich, Helsinki and more. Operational from 1969, Fuerteventura Airport today serves more than 4 million passengers yearly.
Getting around
To get from Fuerteventura Airport to the city of Puerto del Rosario or the resort town of Corralejo, the simplest and most convenient way would be to grab a cab from outside the airport for a direct ride to your destination. Cabs can easily be found outside the arrival hall of the main airport building, and - whilst fares are not exactly cheap - the comfort and convenience is well worth it.
Otherwise, public buses are also available from the airport to Puerto del Rosario as well as to popular tourist destinations like Caleta del Fuste and Las Salinas for a much more wallet-friendly fare. Be sure to take Line 3 if you are going to these areas.
What to see and do
If you’re in Fuerteventura, lucky you - you’re in for a jolly good time! This island was once chosen by the Quality Coast International Certification Program of the European Coastal and Marine Union as one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Europe. On top of that, it was also declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2006 and boasts a huge number of amazing geological features like gorgeous beaches, towering sand dunes, ancient volcanoes and more. With its bright sun rays and warm weather, Fuerteventura is often referred to as the ‘island of eternal spring’ and is perfect for those seeking some beach therapy -- the island also has the longest beaches among all the Canary Islands, stretching up to 98 kilometres long!
For thrill-seekers, this island would be paradise. On Fuerteventura there is something for almost anybody who loves any type of sport -- water-lovers can choose to go deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, snorkelling and more. Looking for even more of an adrenaline rush? Then try your hand at windsurfing or kitesurfing -- the island’s strong Atlantic winds (that inspired its name) and lovely warm waters make for the perfect environment, so perfect that it even hosts the PWA Windsurfing and PKRA Kiteboarding World Cup regularly. But if you’d prefer staying on land, fret not - plenty of options are still available for you. Go on a breathtaking Buggy and Quad Safari tour through the island’s series of 6 volcanoes and see the sand dunes of the Jable desert, lava fields, high cliffs, lagoons, volcanic bays and more.
