Surat, a popular town in the Indian state of Gujarat, is a commercial hub and an administrative capital of the Surat district. Previously known as Suryapur, it is located on the banks of Tapti River. Surat is the 2nd largest city in Gujarat and 8th largest city and 9th largest metropolitan area in India. As per a study conducted by the City Mayors Foundation, Surat is the 34th largest city by area and 4th-fastest developing cities. The city has received many awards and recognitions viz "best city by the Annual Survey of India's City-Systems" and "first smart IT city in India”. Sprawling on an area of 326.515 km2 and elevation of 13 meters above sea level, the city currently serves home to 4.6 million people. The people of Surat speak Gujarati, Hindi and English. Another significant attraction from the historical perspective is Dandi in Surat. Located around 5 km from the main city, this is the center for the production of salt and is known to be the place from where Mahatma Gandhi started his Dandi March against the British in India. The textile market in Surat is reputed as possessing the best-embroidered products of silk and brocade.
