CLT is one of the largest hub of US Airways with more than 176 international and domestic destination according to the data of 2008. CLT was the sixth busiest airport in the world in 2010 when measured in terms of traffic movement and 23rd when measured in terms of passenger traffic. CLT has a total of five concourses and the sixth one is under construction. Each concourse has an average of 20 gates which serves both civil and military operations. History

In 1930, the budget for the construction of Charlotte’s first municipal airport was granted. In 1936, the airport was inaugurated and boarded its first flight in 1937. In 1941, US Army Air Forces took control over the airport and used it for antisubmarine patrols and training. The airport was renamed to its current name in 1982. Concourse A was built in 1986 and Concourse B and C in 1987 and 1984 respectively. In 1980s the old terminal site and Eastern Terminal was converted to Cargo center. In 2003, 13 new ticket counters were constructed to ease the passenger flow.

 

A new security checkpoint and expansion of concourse D with additional nine gates was constructed in 2004. A fourth parallel runway is planned to be constructed in 2015 which is scheduled to be completed in 2017 which will be built in between the two current runways.
