Dhaka Airport – Shahjala International Airport

The Dhaka airport which is also known as Shahjalal International airport is the largest airport in Bangladesh. Operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, it was earlier known as Zia International airport and Dacca International airport. Located in the Kurmitola in Northern Dhaka, this airport is the sole international airport in Bangladeshand also serves as a base for the Bangladesh Air Force.


The Dhaka airport has been operational since 1941 and served as a military airport during the Second World War. Spreading on an area of 1,981 acres of land, the Dhaka airport in Bangladesh serves 66% of the country’s domestic and international arriving and departing international as well as domestic travellers. The ground handling provider of the airport is Biman Bangladesh Airlines. With an average aircraft movement of 190 flights in a day, 27 international and domestic flights from Bangladesh connect the country with around 38 cities and 4 continents across the world. The airport reported 5.6 million passengers and 2, 14,000 tonnes of cargo during the year 2012. Various plans for development and modification of the runway as well as several parts of the airport are currently underway.


At present there are 3 terminals at the Dhaka airport. While terminal 1 and 2 are dedicated for international passengers, terminal 3 is to domestic passengers. The ground floor at the airport serves as the arrival deck while the upper floor is the departures hall. A VIP terminal is available only about 200 meters from the main gate and is only used occasionally. Hangers, sophisticated radar, a freight village (warehouse) and other modern equipment for handling aircraft are available at the Dhaka airport. Duty free shopping, baggage services, assistance to old and physically challenged passengers, restaurants, food & beverage counters, prayer room, currency exchange counter, customs counter and custom halls are available at the airport.

The second largest and busiest airport after the Dhaka airport is the Chittagong airport, which is also known as Shah Amanat International airport. The Agartala airport in India is just 86 km from the Dhaka international airport.
