Located at the northern end of Vypeen Island, Cherai Beach is one of the most visited beaches near Kochi, about 25 km from the city centre. What makes it special is the combination of sea and backwaters — golden sands on one side, still lagoons on the other. The beach stretches for around 10 km and is ideal for swimming, with mostly low tides and gentle waves. Dolphin sightings are not unheard of here either. Getting here by ferry followed by a short auto-ride through village lanes is half the fun.

Puthuvype is one of Kochi's quieter finds — a relatively undiscovered stretch of turquoise water and golden sand anchored by a working lighthouse. Because it hasn't been heavily promoted, it stays largely free of vendors and crowds. Climbing the lighthouse between 3pm and 5pm offers sweeping views of the coast and backwaters that are well worth the effort.

Kuzhupilly sits at the edge of where beach meets backwater, giving it a distinctive dual character that most beaches in Kerala can't match. Kuzhupilly is a quieter beach near Kochi, good for peaceful walks, fresh sea air and slow evenings. Paddy fields and coconut groves frame the shoreline, making it a favourite with photographers. Local fishermen work the waters here throughout the day, adding a grounded, unhurried feel to the place.

Munambam Beach sits at the northern tip of Vypeen Island near the Munambam Fishing Harbour in Ernakulam district. It's where the Periyar River meets the Arabian Sea, a spot to watch local fishermen in traditional canoes, try canoe rides and catch a spectacular sunset. The beach is particularly popular for kite flying, and is dotted with Chinese fishing nets. Dolphin sightings are reported here too. It's a low-key slice of Kerala coastal life, well away from tourist infrastructure.
