A city located in central Morocco, Agadir is the capital of Agadir-Ida Ou Tanane province. At a distance of 509 km from Casablanca, 173 km south of Essaouira and 235 km southwest of Marrakech, Agadir is a popular beach resort city in Morocco. The city is scenically located on the shores of Atlantic Ocean, on the foot of Atlas Mountains; Sahara desert surrounds the city on the Atlantic coast. Home to the Berber community, the city is famed for its tolerance level and boasts of clean beaches, first class golf courses and health and beauty spas. Located at an elevation of 74 meters above sea level, the city has a population of over 615,229, which makes it the 7th largest in Morocco. The history of the city can be traced back to the 12th century and the oldest cartographic mention of Agadir is on a map from 1325. The history before it is unknown. The city has been ruled by the Portuguese, Saadian and Alawite dynasties under whose rule it grew and prospered. Amazigh (Berber) is the mother tongue of most of the inhabitants of the city. However, Arabic, Ta-Chelh-it and French are also spoken.

Currently more than 35 airline operators connect Agadir with the rest of the world. The city has a subtropical-semiarid climate that is characterized by warm summer rand mild winter. This is a coastal area and average precipitation is highest during winters. In summer, temperatures do not exceed 20 °C while the average daytime temperature during winter is 21°C. Rainfall is rare and fog is the most common type of moisture. The months from December to March are the best time to visit the city. Timitar festival, Film Festival for immigration, Noiz Makerz concert of urban music, International Documentary Film Festival in November, Film Festival for immigration and Festival of Laughter are the major cultural festivals held in Agadir.

City Attractions

Primarily a beach resort, the city is filled with numerous beaches, natural attractions along with new notable architectural monuments as well. Beach is the most important attractions in the city that attracts tourists from all over the world. The Agadir beach is the beach which is lined with luxury resorts and food joints. Kasbah is a monumental heritage and is probably the only surviving architectural attraction in the city. You can reach atop the fortress to enjoy commanding views of the city. City Centre, which is the core of the city also, has many interesting monuments that are worth sighting. Grand Mosque, Amazighe Museum and Marrakesh's Tiskiwine Museu, are all located here.

Essaouira, which is one of Morocco's loveliest seaside towns and a UNESCO Approved world heritage site, is also a major draw. When in Agadir, plan a visit to the Taroudant, which are surrounded by impressive terracotta walls and offer excelling shopping opportunities. Tafraoute is a unique mountain village famed for its stunning mountain scenery of pink and orange rocks. Tiznit which is another popular fort and Souss-Massa National Park, a wonderful place for bird watching are also major attractions in Agadie.

Eating and Shopping

When in Agadir, the options of enjoying a great fresh food platter are unlimited. The city has been divided into four main zones and each offers endless options. Nouveau Talbourjt is the part of the town which houses the cheapest restaurants. The beach is another major part of the town that is lined with various local as well as world famous fast food joints like McDonald etc. Unlike the other areas, this is the place to enjoy a drink as most restaurants serve alcohol at top end prices. If you are looking for mid-range restaurants, head to the area around the Uniprix where there is a mix of restaurants aimed at tourists and those for locals. A taxi depot, Batoir, is known for its good choice of really cheap grills, chicken shops and cafes. Numerous vendors selling grilled corn, soup, pancakes and other quick bites can be found here. The city does not have a very happening nightlife as most of the locals abstain from drinking. Actor's, Loft, and Papagayo are popular nightclubs for tourists.

If you are looking to buy the quintessential arts and crafts that Morocco is famous for, then this might not be the place for you. Spices, designer clothes, home furnishing, toiletries, teapots, glasses, tagines, argon oil and traditional shoes are things you can buy at Agadir. Besides the major shopping district, there are smaller souks (traditional Arabian markets) from where you can buy the local crafts and ethnic stuff. Uniprix shop, the Marina, Marjane hypermarket and Marrakech are the popular shopping destinations in the city.
