Alicante-Elche Airport is situated 9 kilometres southwest of the capital, in the municipality of Elche. It is the gateway to Alicante, one of the fastest growing cities in Spain. In 2013, Alicante-Elche Airport handled 9,638,860 passengers, 68,303 flight operations and 2,589 tonnes of cargo.

How to get around

Several intercity buses connect the airport to the city along with the tram. Numerous car rental services are available and these include Avis, Centauro, Enterprise Atesa, Europcar, Goldcar Rental, Hertz, Record Go and Sixt.

Alicante can be comfortably covered on foot; distances are short and it is easy to get from one place to another.

What to see and do

Alicante is a city whose economy is based on tourism from the beaches along Costa Blanca. It is lined with palm-tree flanked boulevards and shopping streets. The original name of the city “Lucentum” translates as “City of Light”. Alicante is filled with stunning beaches, huge plazas, wonderful parks and great weather.

Some of the sights worth visiting are Castillo de Santa Barbara, or Santa Barbara Castle. Located in the centre of Alicante, it is one of the biggest medieval fortresses of Spain. Perched atop Mount Benacantil, it offers spectacular views of the city. Apparently, when the castle is viewed from the El Postiguet beach, one can see a strange projected part in the shape of a human face which has been termed the ‘Moor’s Head’.

The Museum of the City of Alicante, housed inside the Castle of Santa Barbara, introduces visitors to various Spanish conquests through different historical periods. On display are archaeological materials, sculptures and busts of famous Spaniards.

Sun lovers will want to spend at least a day on La Playa de San Juan or San Juan beach which has been awarded the Blue Flag of the European Union. Located 4.5 miles from central Alicante, it is the perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming and also has a good selection of shops, bars, cafes, restaurants.

You can also chill out at some of the city’s great parks. The Canalejas Park, the oldest in the city, was created by the architect Gonzolez Altus. It has stone sculptures of dogs and lions at the entrance, beautiful fountains, a children’s play area and a map of Spain carved out of stone. El Palmeral, on the outskirts of the city, has lovely waterfalls, lakes and hundreds of palm trees. Families with kids might want to go to Terra Natura Park, a park-cum-zoo that is home to 1,500 animals of around 200 species. It also has a water park, many water rides and a large pool area.

Since you are in Spain, you might want to catch a bullfight -- Plaza de Toros is one of Spain’s oldest bull rings where bullfights still take place.
