Jordan’s capital and most populous city, Amman is one among the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Having an estimated popular of 4 million people, the city is also the center of Jordan’s commercial, political and cultural sector. The city is the seat of the present government and ranked as a Beta− global city on the World city index. Located in a hilly area of north-western Jordan, at an altitude of 700 meters above se level, the city spreads on an area of 1,680 km2 of land. Amman is one of the fastest growing cities in the region and is popular tourist destination, especially for the Persian Gulf tourists. The history of the city dates back to 13th century BC when it was known as Rabbath Ammon. A major city during the Ottoman’s empire, currently the city is the administrative head of Jordon. While Arabic is the official language of Amman, English is also spoken widely.

Overview

All the flights coming to Amman land at the Amman Queen Alia International airport which is located around 30 km from the city. This is the largest airport in Jordan and currently more than 40 airlines connect the airport to more than 50 destinations around the world. Located close to the Mediterranean Sea, Amman features semi-arid climate which is marked by long hot and dry summer and wet and cool winter. The city experience summer from mid-June to early October after a brief spring hiatus from April to May. Winter generally begin from late November or early December and continue till mid-March. Summers are dry with cloudless skies and during the winter temperature generally averages 17 °C. Rainfall is a rare occurrence and droughts are common. Amman has extreme examples of microclimate, and almost every district exhibits its own weather. The best time to visit Amman is during the winter season. Amman Summer Festival and Souk Jara are two of the most popular festivals in Amman.

City Attractions

The city is exceptionally popular for its rich history and various heritage sites which still resonate of the bygone era. Citadel, located in center of downtown Amman is a major attraction known for its ancient ruins of the Citadel, which is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited places dating back to the Neolithic period. Royal Automobile Museum showcases an impressive collection of cars and motorcycles of the late King Hussein from the early 1920’s through present day. Jabal Amman which is filled with historic homes and an outdoor market is one of the most charming attractions in Amman. Your visit to Amman is incomplete if you do not take a day trip to the ancient and historical site of Petra.

Amman is also famed for its nightlife which can be best enjoyed at Abdoun which is filed with nightclubs, hip restaurants and cafes. Another must see attraction in Amman is the Roman Amphitheater that was built under the rule of Emperor Antoninus Pius and is noted for its cultural and sporting event that still take place here. Jabal Al Weibdeh is one of the quieter parts of the city and provides the more authentic and traditional ambiance of Amman. The Darat Al-Funun, a popular art center is located here.

Eating and Shopping

While there are many restaurant and cafes serving a wide range of cuisines while in Amman tourists should not miss enjoying the traditional mezze platter which includes hummus, olive oil, zaatar, halloumi and salad. The cuisine of Amman is very similar to Middle Eastern cuisine and traditional platter includes freshest vegetables, spicy meat dishes and varieties of condiments to go with them. Al-Quds Falafel, Hashem, Habibah , Fire of Brazil, Zalatimo Sweets, Fakhr el Din, Reem and Al Quds are some the most popular local restaurants in Amman. Some of the popular dishes one hould not miss in Amman are - Mansaf, the national dish of Jorda, shawarma, baklava, Burma, Kunafeh, fuul and falafel.

Amman offers the tourists a unique shopping charisma which you cannot experience anywhere else in the world. While the city has abundant number of malls and international brand outlets, the experience of shopping in a souk, is matched. Whether its spices, carpets, traditional handicrafts, fragrant perfumes or antiques, everything is available in Amman. A keffiyeh, the traditional checkered headpiece of Jordanian men, an antique brass tea/coffee pot, olive wood carvings, hand-crafted Jordanian daggers, hand-made Bedouin-style embroidered clothing and Dead Sea products are some of the major buys. Abdali Boulevard, The Balad, Abdali Market, Wakalat Street and Rainbow Street are the major shopping areas in Amman.
