Along the southern coast of Gujarat is the quaint town of Diu. It overlooks the Arabian Sea and is a former colony of the Portuguese. As it was an important port along trade routes, Diu's Portuguese influence can be seen in the architecture of its historical buildings and can be experienced in its food. The languages spoken in Diu are Gujarati, Marathi, Hindi, and English. Portuguese too is spoken in parts. Climate

Beaches
Nagoa Beach is the probably the most popular of Diu's beaches. It's a nice place for families with kids. There are water sports options and plenty of restaurants along the beach. Goghla Beach is relatively quiet with fewer people. You can choose to walk along it for long stretches. There is enough space and seclusion for a game of beach cricket if you feel like it. Jallandar Beach, like Goghla, is secluded and quiet. It has the Jallandar Shrine on a hill top close by from which you can look out on to the Arabian Sea for a breathtaking view of the sunset.
Places with history
One of the first things visitors from Mumbai to Diu will notice is that with the exception of Fort Diu, this coastal town has no tall buildings.
Fort Diu is expansive and one of India's most picturesque places to explore. It stands at the water's edge and offers a spectacular view of the Arabian Sea and the coastal town. The presence of a lighthouse, as well as canons still in place, gives you a real sense of the Fort's Portuguese history.
Across the water from Fort Diu, you will see Fortim Do Mar, an old and now abandoned prison from the Portuguese era. The Fort also houses three old churches built in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi which now functions as a hospital, St Thomas's Church which has been converted to Diu Museum, and Saint Paul's Church, which is still used as a church as well as a school.
Other places to visit: The Gangeshwar Mahadev Temple is a peaceful and quiet place to worship located at sea level, where the water comes into the temple at high tide. The Naida Caves, formed by the natural process of erosion, are a star attraction is Diu. They are very different from other caves – full of light and ventilation with tree roots and vines all around them.
Take some pictures with your family against the impressive Zampa Gateway. Made of red stone with carvings of angels and lions, this gateway was formerly the entrance to the city of Diu. Lastly, visit the Diu market for some night life with its bars, and restaurants – with both vegetarian and seafood specialities.
