Burgas – Black Sea’s Largest Port City

The 4^th largest city in Bulgaria, after Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna, Burgas is also spelt as Bourgas. The city is the largest port on Black Sea and serves as the capital of Burgas Province. Black Sea, Burgas Bay and Burgas Lake surround the city on all sides and total of 200,271 inhabitants reside in the city. At an elevation of 30 meters above sea level, Bourgas is not only the industrial, tourist and cultural center of Bulgaria, but it is also the center of the Bulgarian fishing and fish processing industry. The history of the city stretches back to the ancient times when the present city was divided into small fisherman villages. Situated at the southern half of Bulgaria's Black Sea, Bourgas lies on a flat plain on the western-most point of Bourgas Bay. Majority if the people in the city speak Bulgarian, which is the official language of the country. However, English is also spoken by a few people.

Burgas Airport is the major airport serving the city and it is the second-most important airport in the Bulgaria. All flights to Bourgas land at this airport which is 10 km southeast Bulgaria and is currently connected to more than 109 destinations in 31 countries. The city experiences humid subtropical climate with some maritime and continental influences. Summer season lasts for 5 months from Amy till September and temperature rarely exceeds 24 °C. Winters in Bourgas is mild with temperature averaging between 4°C-5°C.  While January is the coldest month of the year, August is the wettest. Tourists planning a trip to the city can visit at any time of the year. Sumer months, however, is the peak tourist season and during these months the price of the hotels are very high. International Folklore Festival in August, Spirit of Burgas in mid-August, Bourgas Sand Fest in Julu, Erata na Wodoleja in May, Three Week Festival of Opera and Classical Music in July, Kite boarding Regatta in August, Burgas Sailing Week in May and WDSF Burgas Cup are some of the major festivals and events held in Burgas.

City Attractions

The city which is surrounded by water from most sides, boasts of numerous natural as well as historical attractions which tourists should not miss on their trip to Bourgas. Central beach, North Beach and Burgas Beach are the most important beaches in Bourgas and are the perfect places to enjoy swimming, windsurfing, and kite surfing and strolling. Ethnographic Museum, Archaeological Museum, Historical Museum and Nature and Science Museum along with various art galleries are also available for the history buffs. If you are travelling with kids or love nature then plan visit to The Flora (an annual international flower exhibition), Poda (a part of beautiful wetland area), Sea Garden (located near the North Beach) and Mosta (located inside the Sea Garden). St Kiril and Metodii church and Armenian Church are popular religious attractions in Burgas.

Vaya Lake is the biggest lake in the city famous for fishing and is home to more than 250 species of birds. Atanasovsko Lake and Mandrensko Lake are also major lakes in Bourgas. Petko Zadgorski Art Gallery, Sveti Sveti Cyril, Holy Mother of God Roman Catholic Church and Methodius and Bourgas Opera House are among the major attractions in Bourgas. Sunny Beach at a distance of 30 km, Sozopol around 34 km, UNESCO protected historical town of Nesebar at a distance of 20 km are the popular day trips from Bourgas.

Eating and Shopping

Burgas is a small city which boasts of abundant eating joints and restaurants serving an array of cuisines. Aleksandrovska Street and Bogoridi Street are the most popular places for eating and nightlife. Some of the most popular Bulgarian dishes one should try here are - variety of salads, grilled pork or lamb and kavarma. Many pizza places, restaurants serving international fare, specialized Chinese restaurants and sea food restaurants along with pubs can be found on the beach side. During the summer months, many open air restaurants and small pubs mushroom in the area. The main streets in the city also have plentiful vendors selling quick bites within €1 – 2. The city is very popular for its fresh fruits, vegetable and sea food which form the staple in the diet of the locals.

The small town of Bourgas is exceptionally popular for its ceramics, contemporary art, silver artifacts, modern jewellery and paintings made by the local. While the International chains like Billa, Carrefour and Metro are present in the city, but there are no high end stores and mega brand outlets. Shopping in Bourgas is confined to center of the town, which has two streets selling stuff at reasonable price. Most of the gold jewellery sold here comes from Turkey. Burgas Plaza Mall is the most popular mall in the city.
