Discover Corfu

There are many islands around the world with blue skies, sandy beaches and nice resorts. However, the Greek island of Corfu, the second largest of the Ionian Islands in the Ionian Sea will beat many of them hands down. Fly to Corfu via Corfu International Airport, also known as "Ioannis Kapodistrias” to the locals. Flying into Corfu International Airport, your love affair with the island will start in mid-flight, as the flight offers passengers a spectacular aerial view of Pontikonisi and Vlaherna Monasteries as well as the hills of Kanoni, as the runway used for landing is actually only a few hundred metres away from these landmarks. As there are no direct flights from India, you will need to transit at one of the many airports in Europe that have flights to Corfu.

How to get around

There are only two methods of getting to Corfu town. There is a taxi rank outside the terminal where you can hop into a taxi or wait at the bus stop for local blue buses numbered 5 and 6, that travel not only to Corfu city but destinations all over the island as well. Trips generally take 10 minutes or less since the airport is only 3 kilometres away from the city centre. If you are driving into town, just follow Route 25 which leads directly to Kerkyra.

What to see and do

Corfu’s history has its roots in Greek mythology. Poseidon, god of the sea, and Asopos, an important Greek mainland river, fell in love and gave birth to Phaiax, after whom the inhabitants of the island were named – Phaiakes; Corfu's nickname is The island of the Phaeacians. The city's Old Town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it a place you really should visit.

The three forts of the town, designed by Venetian engineers, were used to defend the Republic of Venice against the Ottoman Empire.

Other than the Old Town, visit also the old citadel Palaio Frourio, an old Venetian fortress built on an artificial islet with fortifications surrounding its entire perimeter, and a new citadel Neo Frourio, a huge complex of fortifications dominating the northeastern part of the city. Both attractions will let you in on the stories of the past through its maze of medieval corridors and fortifications, and be amazed beyond wonder at their grandeur and splendour. In the evening, stroll along the gardens by Palaia Anaktora, which houses a Museum of Asian Art and the Art Café.
