SIMPLY WONDERFUL - WE REVEAL WHY WE'VE BEEN COMING EVERY YEAR SINCE 2010.
I have to admit that I read about a steam railway that ran to the top of a mountain in a UK national paper and was intrigued to find out for myself whether this was an exaggeration. Flying to Hannover (no holiday queues) and a two hour punctual train journey later, we were gratefully picked up at the station by the apartment owners Ronald and Annelie Mund who both had a good grasp of the English language. To try and condense what is now a 6 year love story with the Harz region, we have ridden in an open carriage behind a steam locomotive to the top of the Brocken Mountain (a former lookout post for the GDR army); walked miles through the forests on clearly marked paths; used the free bikes provided by the Mund family to explore picturesque local towns and villages on safe separate cycle tracks; swam in at least six glorious open-air swimming pools (Freibads) that would be closed in the UK as not being cost effective; traveled by free buses to such beautiful nearby towns including Goslar, Quedlinburg, Bad Hartzburg, Braunlage, and Halberstadt; been tree walking for the first time in my 64 years existence (Kletterwald); and of course enjoyed the many delicious food and drink establishments. Wernigerode has its own Brewery (Hasserode) and is always present at the many festivals arranged in the summer around the region. Tahle, a small town just an hour's bus ride from Wernigode has in addition to some of the most beautiful scenery in the Harz, has the famous Hexentanzplatz which according to legend is the witches dance floor! If you have children young or old, they'll love the witches theme in most tourist attractions plus cable cars, a wild life park, open air theatre, a theme park, and a Thermal Spa.In the latter, my family enjoyed the beautiful view of the Bodetal whilst sat in a heated open air swimming pool. "Is this paradise?"
The accommoddation which is just below the fairy-tale looking castle has seven self-contained apartments, five of which face a central internal courtyard. Two have their own balcony. There is also a communal laundry room. There is private parking The town centre is just a few minutes walk away. You'll want for nothing but if I've missed anything just ask Ronald or Annelie. And finally, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the price of a holiday which can offer so much fun, entertainment, healthy exercise and sporting facilities, good food and great chemical free beer. A very different holiday to the sun drenched beach holidays.
