A highly enjoyable night out

We had a lovely evening at MH on Saturday, with the full taster meal. In the evening sun the venue was lovely (hard to believe you were in Norfolk). Clearly this is an expensive night out, but the food was excellent and well paced. Unlike the reviewer below we thought the staff were terrific. I can’t stand over fussy explanations etc but I think they got it just right. The largely young team were attentive and knowledgeable, and not too scared not to make a joke or two which was nice.

Good but not outstanding

Not quite. Maybe a tad fussy but although the food was good there is clearly an inexperienced front of house team. Everyone polite and willing but little things like plates not cleared away, “is everything OK” queries, “would you like?” Etc. very forthright enquiry regarding allergies and “ have you paid the bill” - may be a little picky but it’s not cheap for sandwiches and tea, and we weren’t looking for bargain food, just expected a bit more from a Michelin starred establishment. Don’t rest on your laurels guys.

APPALLING SERVICE

Readers: Apologies for length of this - it is not a rant, merely an honest review - please read on.
The restaurant here was recommended by a trustworthy source. However, this source knew nothing about the ‘Champagne Afternoon Tea’, which two of us had on Wednesday 17 June. It was booked well in advance and for 14:30 that day. We were very disappointed to say the least.
We arrived early - and booked in with reception - so we could have a drink at the bar, which took a while to come. 14:30 came and went, and other customers were being shown in to the conservatory for their afternoon tea. After waiting 10/15 minutes, we went off in search of a staff member, whom we eventually found. She made a poor excuse along the lines of they didn’t want to disturb us because we were “enjoying” our drinks. How would they even know? We’d finished our drinks at least 20 minutes beforehand!
We were shown through to our table and had to wait a while for anyone to approach. We were poured a - small - glass of very nice champagne and, eventually someone came to take our tea order. We ordered a different type of tea each, and asked about plain scones as opposed to the fruit variety - evidently they had none. Each time the waitress came over she apologised for the wait. Our tea was mahogany-coloured: stewed and undrinkable. They had put a ?commercial size? teabag into a tiny silver pot, so no wonder!
All of the sandwiches, scotch (quail’s) eggs and ‘sweet things’ were delicious and the latter were exceptionally well presented.
The scones were fresh but somewhat dry. The ‘cheese’ scone tasted sweet (!) and had very little cheese in it, whilst one of the fruit scones had only 3 small pieces of fruit in it.
This was in no way worth the £65 per person: the food - except for the scones - was delicious but everything else fell far short of even ‘ordinary’ expectations.
Our (separate) bar bill for 2 small glasses of champagne and 2 small cocktails, was an extortionate £78!
And the service was unacceptable: it was appalling.

A wonderful experience.

I had the best experience. I was treated to the taster menu with the wine flight.
The service was excellent every member of staff were so helpful friendly and were able the share their knowledge of the food where it came from and why the wine offered with each course matched. The receptionist even helped when our taxi had arrived and we were still eating.
We had the pleasure of meeting the head chef who obviously has a passion for food and sharing his knowledge and skills.
I would so recommend a visit
