1. The Golden Temple
The Golden Temple (or Harmandir Sahib) is the holiest site of Sikhism. Attacked and demolished by raiders many times, the current structure of marble and copper was built in 1809 at the behest of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The sanctum sanctorum was then overlaid with golden foil in 1830, and thus the shrine acquired the name of the Golden Temple. At evening, witness the beautiful reflection of the temple in the central tank – known as the Amrit Sarovar. The Golden Temple sees more visitors than the Taj Mahal! Do not forget to have a vegetarian meal at the langar. The community run kitchen serves an average of 75000 visitors each day!
Best time to visit: The Golden Temple is open 24 hours. Early morning and late night is the best period to avoid queues.
Reasonable time to be spent: 120 minutes
Tips: Remember to carry a scarf as you need to keep your head covered at the site.
2. The Wagah Border
The Wagah Border is a must on the list of places to see in Amritsar. Patriotism is at its ceremonial best here. Every evening before sunset, the soldiers from India and Pakistan lower the flags at this international border with a set of perfectly coordinated and well- orchestrated manoeuvres. Be prepared to brave the rambunctious crowds.
