Rostov-on-Don makes a pleasant stopover on the way to Sochi and the Black Sea. Go tractor-racing in summer or take a ride along the river that flows through the city; the river celebrated in Mikhail Sholokhov’s ‘And Quiet Flows the Don’and ‘The Don Flows Home to the Sea’ is Southern Russia’s largest and most cosmopolitan city.

 

Climate: Winters in Rostov-on-Don are moderately cold with February averages going down to -3.1°C. Summers are warm and sunny.July temperatures average 23.3 °C.

 

Food: Aside from traditional soups and salads like blini, plemini, and borsch, familiar staples such as bread, potato, pork, beef, sausages, fish, chicken, rice, buckwheat, salted cucumbers or cabbage, pastries and caviar abound. Kvas, a drink from fermented bread, is a popular beverage.

 

Culture: The city is the focus of the revival of the Don Cossack culture. Russian national artist Mikhail Bushnov works in the Academic Drama Theater named after author Maxim Gorky. He is an honorary citizen of Rostov-on-Don. The city is also a large educational and scientific center and has the third largest university after Moscow and Saint-Petersburg. There are four theaters, the Don State public library (the largest in the south of Russia), S.V.Rakhmaninov conservatoire, and several exhibition halls. Rostov-on-Don is one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

 

History and Architecture: Rostov-on-Don’s whole history beginning from a little settlement near Temernitskaya customs and St. Dimitry Rostovsky fortress is reflected in architectural, archaeological and monumental art; as well as in memorial ensembles of military glory. In 1806, it was officially renamed Rostov-on-Don. The most conspicuous architectural feature of the central part of the city is the Cathedral of Virgin's Nativity (1860–1887), designed by Konstantin Thon.

 

Shopping: Rinok, which means bazaar or family market is behind the Rozhdestva Cathedral. Rostov doesn’t get too many tourists, so don’t expect touristy souvenirs but get a feel of what the locals do at this massive assortment of tiny shops and booths. They sell clothes, shoes, fish, meat or fancy salads. It might take a while to find and a bit of haggling too, but it is worth the feel. Or go for the pricier department stores around it.

 

Sightseeing in Rostov-on-Don:

Pushkin Street is the main walking promenade and is lined with cafes, flowers and little statues. The Embankment is a walk by the river Don with summer street performers and river boat rides. The Memorial Stele and October Revolution Park are other attractions in the town.

 

Getting to and fro from the airport:
The airport is a ten-minute taxi ride to downtown. Check with your hotel if they offer a free shuttle service to and fro from the airport.
