What to see & do
Port Blair is a beautiful island to visit if you want a quiet and relaxing time away from the chaos of city life. It is an incredibly attractive town sprawled over lush green hills and several deep blue bays that fuzz into a soft focus seascape horizon. There is nothing much to see on this island but the stay here will definitely leave you rejuvenated and relaxed by the end of your trip.
The Cellular Jail National Memorial is an attraction worth visiting if you are interested in understanding the important space the Andamans occupies in India’s national memory. This jail became something like a university for freedom fighters who spent their time exchanging books, ideas and even debates despite the walls and wardens. Do stay for the sound and light show which is definitely worth seeing.
Learn more about the island’s ecosystem, tribal communities, flora and fauna at the Samudrika Marine Museum. This museum is run by the Indian Navy and is probably one of the best science museums on the island. Alternatively, head to the Port Blair Aquarium where you will find rows of glass jars containing ghoulish formaldehyde-preserved corpses of fish! The array of fish isn't so impressive but it is one of the options if you are looking to fill your day with something to do.
Visitors usually don’t travel all the way to Port Blair for the beach but if you need to sunbathe or a sand fix, head to the Corbyn’s Cove, located just 7km away from the town. You will be able to relax on a hammock on the coast packed by palms. This place is popular with the locals. It is also a great spot for swimming and watching the sun disappear into the horizon.
