Discover Nagpur
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport serves the city of Nagpur, located in the state of Maharashtra in India. The largest city in Central India, Nagpur is one of the fastest growing cities in India and has already achieved many accolades -- notably, it was chosen by a news agency as the best city in India in terms of liveability, greenery, transport and healthcare and also sports the highest literacy rate. On top of that, Nagpur is also sometimes referred to as ‘Orange City’ due to the famous Nagpur oranges it produces, as well as the ‘Tiger Capital of India’ for the many tiger reserves it houses.
Named after Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, once a chief architect of the Indian Constitution, Nagpur’s airport has an area of more than 1,000 acres and offers mostly domestic flights to major cities in India, though it also offers one international flight to Sharjah in the Middle East (as of July 2014).
The airport is slated for further development and expansion.
Getting around
Located less than 10 kilometres from the city of Nagpur, getting to and from the airport is easy. Tourists are advised to take a taxi directly from the airport to their destination, as public transport facilities like bus stands and train stations are located quite a distance from the airport. Taxis can easily be found outside the airport, and fares are rather cheap. Those without much luggage may also want to consider grabbing an auto-rickshaw instead of a taxi for a cheaper and breezier ride into the city.
What to see and do
Once you’re in Nagpur, do check out the Ambazari Lake, the city’s biggest and most beautiful lake (it is named after the mango trees that surround it -- Amba means mango in Marathi, the local tongue). One of the most popular tourist attractions in Nagpur, the Ambazari Lake offers not just scenic beauty in the form of tranquil blue waters surrounded by greenery, but also plenty of family-friendly activities -- some of these include boating, toy train rides, playgrounds, musical fountains and much more. On top of that, the beautiful Ambazari Garden is also nearby. Managed by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, the Garden provides children with non-stop entertainment with its electric rides and walking trails.
After that, be sure to check out the majestic striped cats the city is known for by visiting the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, which houses more than 40 tigers. The reserve is part of the immense Tadoba National Park and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Maharashtra’s oldest and largest national parks. It is home to a treasure trove of biodiversity in the form of wild dogs, large cats like panthers and tigers, sloth bears, hyenas, barking deer, jackals and much more.
