Given Nagpur’s location in the geographical centre of India, Nagpur Airport has great logistical importance. Popularly known as Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur Airport only catered to domestic travellers but, since October 16, 2005, it has been upgraded to become an international passenger and cargo hub. The facility has a terminal building with a holding of more than 90,000 sq ft.

Nagpur airport is just 7 km from the city centre. Plans are afoot to provide cost-effective transport to and from airport and India's airport authority has planned to commence pre-paid taxi and auto rickshaw services. In addition to this, Vansh Nimaya Infraprojects Ltd has plans to operate Star Bus in the city, to enable passengers to commute between the airport and the centre of the city.

Several domestic airlines operate from Nagpur International Airport to places like Mumbai and Delhi. Two international airlines, namely Air Arabia (Sharjah) and Air-India Express (Dubai), are also operating from the airport. Nagpur also has a Haj terminal and in season, Air India operates 747s direct to Jeddah.

Where to Go

With a number of flights to Mumbai to choose from, getting to this city is easy from Nagpur. Mumbai oozes star-studded glamour. Go for a stroll along Juhu beach, situated in the suburbs, and who knows, you may spot Bollywood actresses like Aishwarya Rai walking her toddler or Deepika Padukone on her morning jog. For less starry pursuits, shop for fruits and vegetables in season at the Crawford market, meditate at the Global Vipassana pagoda and take a boat ride across the Mumbai Harbour to gawk at the Elephanta Caves, a World heritage site.

For a dose of culture, hotfoot it to Kolkata. The Indian Museum there is one of the oldest museums in Asia. Admire Gandhara art and look out for the urn that is said to contain the Buddha’s ashes. Book lovers will want to drop in at the National Library which is the largest in India, with rare books that date back to 1860. Fans of Rabindranath Tagore can check out his original paintings and photographs at the Rabindra Bharati Museum. Look up Netaji Bhavan, the house of freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose (Netaji) and hit a six at the Maidan, a popular cricketing venue.

Pune, the cultural capital of Maharashtra, is home to the Osho Ashram. The meditation courses here attract numerous overseas followers of its founder Bhagwan Rajneesh. Book ahead for a tour of the beautiful grounds. Climb the 108 steps to the top of Parvati Hill for a panoramic view of the city. Hidden in the heart of the city is the Pataleswar Cave temples. The 8th century temple, similar to the Ellora caves, was hewn out of a single rock and is worth a visit.

The east coast is lined with white sand beaches and crystal clear waters for a perfect beach holiday. In the city, you can shop at the malls for Oriental carpets, jewellery and Middle eastern sweets. Glitzy Dubai is an architect’s delight with many landmarks that have scored a world first. Pay a visit to the Burj Khalifa and Ski Dubai. The former is the tallest building in the world while the latter is the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East. What’s a trip to Dubai without a desert adventure – go dune driving, wadi bashing or sand skiing for an adrenaline rush. Throw in a feast in the desert to crown the experience.
