State-of-the-art Hong Kong International Airport, located at Lantau Island, was designed by renowned British architect Lord Norman Foster and was once voted one of the top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century. Sporting 2 terminals, brightly lit and spacious areas, this airport is one of the world’s largest and is extremely well-connected, served by around 100 airlines around the world that reach more than 150 destinations. From the airport, passengers can go not just to Hong Kong Island but also to Mainland China. Priding itself a ‘multi-modal transport hub’, the Hong Kong International Airport even boasts a Sky Pier – a port linked to the airport that offers ferry services – that provides sea connections for transfer passengers so they can get to various ports on the Pearl River Delta speedily. Some of these ports include Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal, Guangzhou Nansha and Shenzhen Fuyong.
Getting around
To get to Hong Kong Island, one can take the fast and efficient MTR Airport Express train that will take one to the city in less than 30 minutes. If not, the Hong Kong International Airport is also linked to the city via highways and bridges for ease of driving. To get to Mainland China, coach services from the airport cover more than 100 cities and towns on the Pearl River Delta.
What to see and do
Little Hong Kong covers a really small land area but is one of Asia’s busiest and most populated metropolises. Nightlife experiences can’t get much better – or cheaper – than at Lan Kwai Fong, a street in Hong Kong filled with flashy discotheques, lively bars and colourful taverns. In this densely populated little city you can also chow down on authentic dim sum that has been replicated across the world, but never done quite in the way it is at its source. Treat your sweet tooth to pineapple buns and sweet buttered rolls saturated with condensed milk, and finish off with popular beverage yuanyang.
If you’re in Hong Kong with the young ones, don’t miss a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland for them to meet their favourite cartoon characters in the flesh. With gorgeous backdrops and prop settings, countless mascots, princesses, stuntmen and performers as well as family-friendly rides, you’d have a hard time getting your kids out of there!
For those who have left their childhood behind, how about Victoria Peak instead? It is one of Hong Kong’s most famous attractions, and for good reason. Take the Peak Tram up for a long, enjoyable scenic ride, and be further awed by the panoramic view you get once at the Peak. With stunning vistas as well as great restaurants awaiting your arrival at the top, what’s stopping you from getting on that plane now?
