Flights began taking of in the Bergamo region as early as 1911. The first airfield, Osio Sotto, was opened that year. Other small airfields were opened up in the same area until finally in 1939 an airport was opened at Orio al serio to serve as a military base. Efforts were made to covert Orio al Serio to a civilian airport but it not until 1972 that this could be achieved. In 16th July 1970, SACBO, company of Milan and Orio al serio airport were incorporated, fronted mainly by large public organizations, banks and selected business groups in the province. This was all in an effort to give Bergamo a civilian airport. During the late nineties, Bergamo experienced growth like it had never before. Infrastructure was largely put up to keep up with the ever changing dynamics in technology. In 2001, Orio al Serio received the passenger sector quality certificate owing to its high standards of service delivery. This move attracted the attention of low cost flyers. 2002 was the year Orio al Serio recorded incredible traffic with most low cost airlines and business airlines.

The airport's innovative security systems inspired most airlines to gain interest in the airport. You have to know that Orio al Serio was almost at the brink of closure but due to the resilience of the stakeholders, it not only survived, but grew exponentially. The airport is now operated by SACBO (Società Aeroporto Civile Bergamo Orio al Serio). It is named I'll Caravaggio in honor of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio who was an exceptionally gifted baroque painter. He resided at Caravaggio, in the province of Bergamo as a child.
