History

Seychelles International Airport was opened by the Queen of England Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 20th March 1972. By that time, Wilkenair of Kenya had already initiated a ferry service between Mahe in Madagascar, Mombasa and Astove Island in Seychelles which operated once a week to Seychelles.

In November 1971 the East African Airways followed and later in the same year in December Luxair followed. On 4th July 1971 a jet called BOAC Super VC10 landed at Seychelles International Airport for the first time. The airport had a control tower and a 2987 m runway by the time it was opening. The Directorate of Civil Aviation was the one that carried out all the ground handling and all the other operations at the airport.

John Faulkner Taylor in 1972 launced the 1st local aircraft company and called it Air Mahe. It operated a Pipe PA-34 Seneca between Fregate, Praslin and Mahe Islands. It was later substituted by a Britten Norman BN-2AIII and by 1974, more than 30 airlines were taking flight to Seychelles. The Aviation Seychelles Company that had been formed in 1973 took over all the airport operations and ground handling.

By July 1980 Passenger traffic started increasing thus construction works for significant expansion at the airport began. A terminal building that could accommodate 400 more passengers arriving and 400 more passengers departing was constructed. A parking bay capable to handle at least six aircrafts as well as a parking area to accommodate at least five light aircrafts was constructed.

Further developments were witnessed in the years 2005 and 2006 as an Aviation Authority Act was enacted to corporatize the Director of Civil Aviation to the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority. Other works to extend and upgrade the terminal building were started so as to enable it accommodate at the least five medium to large aircraft.

More and more expansions were initiated as more parking areas were built on the northeast of the airport so as to handle long stay aircrafts, business and charter aircrafts. This led to a reduced jet-lag thus providing enough rest for the crew.

The airport had grown to be the home of unmanned aerial vehicles controlled by the United States Air Force and the Central Intelligence Agency for operations over the Horn of Africa.
