Berlin Schoenefeld Airport

Land on Deutsch Capital via Berlin Schoenefeld (SXF) Airport

The international Airport of Berlin Schnoenfeld is among the gateways to Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It is situated on the southern boundary of Berlin and in close proximity of Schoenefeld. This town is situated 18 km southeast of Berlin’s central location. This airport is smaller than its counterpart, Berlin Tegel Airport which also serves the same city.  SXF Airport is a base for well known airlines: Condor and easyJet.

Before the reunion of two Deutschland, it was the East Germany’s only primary airport serving publicly. It is also the solitary airport in East Berlin. There is a future improvisation plan and it will be renamed as Berlin Brandenburg Airport in coming years.

Schonefeld Airport was primarily commenced to put up for an aircraft plant known as Henschel.

During the closing stages of World War II, the number of aircrafts had reached 14,000. The soviet troops then successfully invaded the airport in 1945 and the aircraft assembling facilities were either blown up or took apart. However, the construction of civil airport was approved in 1947 and airport rail links repairing were finished along with the construction of agricultural machinery towards end of the year.

According to the agreement between the Allied Forces, the air transportation service was forced to stop in Berlin. No carriers were allowed in the capital city. However, the location of Schonefeld Airport was outside the boundary of Germany and so restriction wouldn’t apply.

After the reunion of Germany in 1990, Germanwings base and easyjet base were opened resulting a significant rise in numbers of passengers over years. A total number of 6 million passengers were recorded in 2008.

It was planned to construct a single airport and be named Berlin Brandenburg Airport at the existing site of this airport to reduce cost expenses as well as excessive aircraft noise from three different airports. However, it has been postponed till 2016 or afterwards for various purposes.

The new airport will be constructed a first-class airport with different plans for existing terminals and runways.

Current update includes the base establishment of Ryanbir by October this year. Five aircrafts will be deployed adding 16 different routes.

Berlin Schoenefeld (SXF) Airport provides runways for aircrafts of various airline companies and they serve millions of passengers to different destinations all over the continents of the world. Some of the daily servers include Aer Lingus, Aeroflot, Belavia, Condor, easyJet, German Air, Germanwings, Norwegian air, Pegasus Air, Ryan air, TAP Portugal, Tunisair and WOW air.

The International Airport of Berlin Schoenefeld hasn’t won a single award for many years after its service. However, it has been rated fourth among the very Best Low-Cost Airline Terminals in 2015. In 2011, ExcuJet FBO operational at this airport was awarded the Gold Fuelling award.
