Antananarivo Airport – Your Entry to Africa’s Land of Milk and Honey

The major international airport in Madagascar, the Antananarivo Airport currently serves Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. The airport is officially known as Ivato International Airport and is currently operated by ADEMA (Aéroports de Madagascar). It is joint civil as well as military airport and serves as hub for Air Madagascar. At an elevation of 1,280 meters above sea level, the airport presently has one runway which is 3,100 meters in length. The Antananarivo Airport is located at a distance of 16 km northwest of the city center and is currently undergoing renovations, which is scheduled to complete in 2020. The airport is sometimes also referred as Madagascar airport and Tana Airport. This is the major airport in the country and is a focal point to several flights to Asia, Europe along with a few regions in Africa.

History

The Ivato International Airport has been serving the people of the Madagascar for many years now. The airport has 2 terminals – one is for domestic traveller and the other which caters to only international passengers. Numerous shops, bars, restaurants and cafes are also available at the Antananarivo Airport. The airport underwent major renovation for Francophonie Summit of 2010. The completion is due in 2020 and once the work is complete, the airport will be equipped with a new runway, three jetways, a car park and a new terminal that will be able to manage 2,500 passengers in an hour. The renovated airport will accommodate takeoffs and landings by the Airbus A380.

The Ivato International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in Madagascar, but in spite of offering decent facilities and excellent services, the airport has still not got any awards or recognition, whatsoever.

How to Check-in

Passengers travelling through the Ivato International Airport have multiple check-in options. Counter closes 45 minutes before departure. For the convenience of the travellers, most of the airlines offer the option of online check-in and mobile check-in. This option can be used anywhere between 24 hours to 2 hours prior to departure of your flight and can be done from anywhere. After online check-in passengers can download and print their boarding pass and skip the process of check-in at the airport. At the Antananarivo Airport multiple check-in counters are available and they generally close 1 hour before departure of domestic flight and 2 hours for those travelling on international route.

Baggage Allowance

Every airline that flies from the Antananarivo Airporthas its own policy regarding baggage allowance and travellers should speak with the airline directly regarding the details on what and how much to carry. Usually passengers are allowed to check-in 23 kg of baggage when travelling in economy class and 32 kg when travelling in business class. As cabin luggage, passengers are allowed to carry 1 bag not exceeding 7 kg in economy class and 1 bag not exceeding 12 kg in business class. Once again, this is the general baggage allowance; do check with your airline before travelling. Charges for excess baggage are levied and can be paid at the airport.

Seating

When travelling to and from the Ivato International Airport or Madagascar Airport, passengers are advised to book the window seat as from there they can enjoy the scenic views of the region during landing and takeoff. Passengers can get a confirmed seat of their choice by paying a small fee and pre booking their seat online during check-in. For those who do not wish to pay anything extra, the next best option is to arrive early for counter check-in and place a request for your preferred seat. At the airport seats are allotted on first come first serve basis and are subject to availability.
