Can one of Europe's oldest countries really be a best-kept secret? It's a good question to ask yourself on a holiday to Bulgaria, where ancient ruins and grand cathedrals meet snow-capped mountains and the lazy shores of the Black Sea. You'll find it all here, from crumbling monuments and luxury ski resorts to a booming wine scene. What you won't find: hordes of tourists driving up the prices.

      FAQs about Bulgaria holidays

Where you stay in Bulgaria depends on the season and your plans. Sofia is great for city life, with easy access to nature, such as Rila National Park. For summer adventures, the Black Sea coast offers plenty of options.
If you want to ski or snowboard, visit in winter when the mountains are coated in world-class powder. For sunbathing and water sports, aim for summer. But if neither of these are on your Bulgaria bucket list, skip the extreme weather and crowds and visit in spring or autumn.
Bulgaria offers stunning landscapes and ancient cities at a fraction of the cost of other European destinations. And it’s not overrun by tourists, so you can enjoy authentic experiences without the high prices. For even better deals, consider visiting during the off-season, though be prepared for cooler or more humid weather.
Bulgaria is generally a safe place to travel, but be cautious of financial scams, such as ATM skimming. And only use taxis with meters. Winter can bring extreme weather, so plan ahead and don’t travel on heavy snow days.
The official language of Bulgaria is Bulgarian, but you’ll also hear Turkish, Romani and Russian. In urban areas, many younger people speak English. Before you go, learn a few key phrases like ‘dobar dehn’ (hello) and ‘blagodarya’ (thank you).
Although Bulgaria is in the European Union, you’ll be using the Bulgarian lev (лв). There are plenty of banks and ATMs in cities and along major roads. But if you’re travelling to remote regions, stock up on cash before departing. It’s common to tip waiters and other service workers 10%.
