Discover Guwahati
Guwahati International Airport is also known as Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport as well as being formally known as Borjhar Airport. The airport acts as the main hub for Northeast India and also serves international destinations. It is an airport that is quickly modernising itself with hopes of attracting a lot more traffic from South East Asia. Visitors from India would be able to take frequent domestic flights such as Air India, GoAir, IndiGo and SpiceJet to this ancient city. Visitors would also be able to get to hill resort cities such as Shillong and Tura by regular scheduled helicopter services from this airport.
What to see & do
The city of Guwahati is also known as the “The City of Temples”. It is an ancient city found in the state of Assam in Northeast India. The city is the largest city in the state, and one of the fastest developing cities of India. Languages spoken here are Assamese and English. The Brahmaputra River steadily follows through the centre of the city as the hills of the Shillong Plateau provide a majestic backdrop. The city originated in 6th century AD and was the capital of Assam until the 10th century AD. The climate of Guwahati is subtropical with pleasant temperatures all year long. Due to the bad (but improving) road conditions, the monsoon season (June to September) is probably best avoided.
The Kamakhya Temple is a must-see for most and draws pilgrims from all over India. It is nestled beautifully atop the Neelachal Hill, which is the highest point of the city. The temple has so much history attached to it along with many myths and legends. It is a major temple for worshippers of Shakti Peethas (goddess Shakti or Sati) and also a centre of tantric worship. A visit to the Uma Nanda Temple makes for an intriguing trip as it is situated on a small island, called Peacock Island, and is only accessible by boat. There is a ferry that runs for 10 rupees each way. The temple on the island is dedicated to Lord Shiva, although the presiding deity here is Umananda. It is an extremely significant temple to Hindus as it supposed to be the residing place of Shiva at the time of creation. The city is surrounded my many wildlife sanctuaries, archaeological ruins and a silk-weaving centre. Kaziranga National Park (a UNESCO world heritage centre) is a popular choice for many. It is easily accessible from the city, and boasts the largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses on the planet.
Getting Around
The airport has ready available taxis and local air-conditioned bus services that can be easily found outside the arrivals gate. Compared to other cities in India, autos charge a hefty price for the ride in this city. There is no meter system used by the autos, the auto driver will simply refuse to drive you if you insist on the meter - the best you can do is negotiate in advance (check with a local on what it should cost you). If your intended destination is Bhutan you’ll have to take a bus from the city to Rangiya and then change again at Tamulpur.
Within the city, the bus is the cheapest way of travelling around the city. The local bus service provides an air-conditioned journey with excellent connections to all other neighbouring towns as well as further afield. Motorbikes can be hired at a decent price, but extreme caution is needed if you’re planning on driving on Indian roads.
