Indore Airport - otherwise known as Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport after the great historic Holkar Queen Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar - serves the city of Indore in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. As of July 2014, Indore Airport only offers domestic flights but plans are underway for its eventual expansion into an international airport. It provides direct flights to many major cities of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and more, and is one of the busiest airports in India. The airport currently consists of one passenger terminal for all domestic flights, as well as one cargo terminal (as of July 2014) and has an area of more than 700 acres.

Getting around

Located less than 10 kilometres from Indore, tourists have many options when it comes to commuting to the city. The cheapest option would be to take a public bus from the bus stand right outside the terminal; many different bus services to various parts of the city are available from there. Otherwise, taxis are also readily available outside the airport.

For those wanting a bit more local flavour, swop the boring taxi for an auto-rickshaw ride instead.

What to see and do

Indore is strategically located on an elevated plain called the Malwa Plateau, just off the Vindhya mountain range. It is the largest city of the state of Madhya Pradesh, and sports a pleasant sub-tropical climate during summer.

If you’re in Indore, do check out one of the most beautiful buildings in the city: the Mahatma Gandhi Hall, which serves as Indore’s town hall. Designed in Indo-Gothic style, it sports magnificent steeples and domes as well as a gorgeous clock tower popularly known as Ghanta Ghar. The Town Hall is considered Indore’s iconic landmark and is the site of many of the city’s most happening fairs and exhibitions throughout the year.

Next, check out Nehru Park, one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Formerly known as Biscow Park, it used to be accessible only by people of British descent during the colonial period but since India’s independence, is free and open to all. It is the oldest park in the city and boasts a lovely display of a variety of roses as well as communal facilities such as a swimming pool, library, battery-operated cars, children’s hobby centre and more. For those wanting a feel of local communal life, there’s no better place to witness it than at Nehru Park.

For a better understanding of this little city’s very long and colourful past, take a look at the Central Museum (or Indore Museum) which portrays in great detail the city’s history as well as information about the ancient peoples who had lived there in pre-historic ages.
