Bajpe Airport - also known as Mangalore Airport - is an international airport serving the port city of Mangalore, located in the state of Karnataka in India. Although it only converted to being an international airport in the early 2000s (it was a customs airport before that), it has since become one of India’s fastest growing airports when it comes to passenger traffic, serving more than 1 million passengers yearly.
As of July 2014, the airport only offers international connections to cities in the Middle East such as Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dubai, Muscat, Doha etc, and is served by domestic and Middle Eastern airlines such as Air India, Spice Jet, Kingfisher Airlines, Etihad Airways and more.
Getting around
Mangalore airport is located in the nearby town of Bajpe, less than 20 kilometres from the city. To get to Mangalore from the airport, the best option would be to get a taxi from right outside the terminal as they are readily available and fares rather inexpensive.
To get around Mangalore, there are numerous public transport options available. There are numerous bus services that blanket the city, and -- if you’re not too intimidated by the routes and timetables all written in Kannada - are a very cheap and efficient way of getting around the city. If you experience difficulty understanding the route and schedule, do ask a local for help! Otherwise, auto-rickshaws are also available as a cheaper alternative to cabs.
What to see and do
Mangalore is known for its unspoilt beauty - it boasts some amazing pristine beaches, palm and coconut trees, rolling hills and is strategically located between the Arabian and Western Sea, resulting in beautiful coastal scenery as well. Named after local Hindu Goddess Mangaladevi, it is today a major port city for Karnataka and one of the cleanest cities in India.
If you’re in Mangalore, you cannot miss this temple: the Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheshwara, a magnificent architectural work of art that also carries great religious significance to the country. It is the site where many religious festivals are held, including Maha Shivaratri, Deepavali, Navrathri and Krisnashtami and many more, most of which involve colourful and splendid celebrations that attract participants from all around the world. Built for worship for the repressed Billavan community by the saint and social reformer Sri Narayana Guru, it represents the rejection of suppression against members of the lower castes. Besides standing as a symbol of equality, the Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple also sports architectural features such as ‘gopuras’ - pillars constructed in the Tamil Nadu style and adorned with murals, marble flooring, life-sized elephants and marble statues. Whether you are religious or not, the Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple is a magnificent sight and worth a personal look.
