The King Abdulaziz International Airport serves the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and is the busiest airport in the country. It is named after King Abdulaziz Al Saud, and has been in operation since 1981. Covering an area of more than 100 square kilometres, it is considered one of the largest airports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and is the entry point to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Currently the airport consists of at least five terminals: two passenger terminals, a tented Hajj Terminal, a Royal Terminal, General Aviation Terminal, and Cargo terminal. Extensive plans for expansion are underway, including the building of 3 new terminals and upgrades of existing terminals that will greatly increase the maximum handling capacity of the airport.

Getting around

The King Abdulaziz International Airport is located about 17km from Jeddah’s city centre. The most popular option for getting from the airport to the city is taking a taxi straight to the destination of choice; taxis are readily available outside the airport and fares are reasonable. Alternatively, a bus service is also available but it may get very crowded, so a taxi ride is likely to be more comfortable.

Plans are underway for a new high-speed rail that will link the airport to the city.

What to see and do

If you are in Jeddah, do check out some of the attractions the city has to offer. The Khuzam Palace, for one, is a recommended option as it is a magnificent sight and also the first building to be constructed using materials like cement and iron in the city of Jeddah. Named after the lavender surrounding it (‘khuzama’ in Arabic), the palace was completed in the 1300s for King Abdul Aziz and sports high ceilings, huge rooms and gorgeous yards and gardens.

Next, take a look at the Jeddah Corniche – a 30km region of coast located along the Red Sea. Not only does it boast amazing natural scenery and great beaches, there is also plenty of man-made beauty to be seen in the form of pavilions, King Fahd’s fountain (the highest fountain in the world), coastal roads and more.

But of course no trip to Jeddah is complete without a visit to the famous Jeddah Floating Mosque. Raised above the sea on a platform resting on pillars, the entire mosque appears to be ‘floating’ as it resides above the Red Sea. An impressive architectural feat combining both modern technology and traditional architecture, the floating mosque is one of the most sacred sites in the city with a large prayer space and soothing ambience suitable for meditation. On top of that, the entire structure is painted an ethereal shimmering white and is lavishly decorated, resulting in a real treat for the eyes -- not to be missed even by non-Muslims.
