Jordan, which is officially known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is a charming country in Western Asia. Sprawling on the East Bank of the Jordan River, the country extends into the historic region of Palestine. The country shares its border with Saudi Arabia in the east & south, with Iraq in the north-east, with Syria in the north and Palestine and Israel in the west. About the Country

Located in the Asian continent, the climate of Jordan can be described as Mediterranean to semi-dry with average temperature in the mid 30°C during summer and 13°C during winter. Some part of the country experiences snowfall during the winters. The spring season from March to May and autumn season lasting from September to November are the best months to travel to Jordan. The Jordan fall festival which is held in the month of September is a spectacular event and a great time to explore the local culture of the country.Islam is the official religion and approximately 92% of the population is Muslim. The official language of Jordan is Modern Standard Arabic, while English without any official status is also spoken widely.

Amman and Salt in the west part of the country, Irbid, Jerash and Zarqa in the northwest region and Madaba, Karak and Aqaba in the southwest are among the major holiday destinations. Major towns in the eastern part of the country are the oasis town of Azraq and Ruwaished. The UNESCO endorsed world heritage site of Petra is by far the most important tourist attraction in Jordan. Petra is a 2000-year-old city carved from sandstone cliffs and is located in the southern part of the country.

The castle of Kerak with its awe-inspiring ring of walls and towers has been a fortress since Biblical times. Qasr Amra and the Desert Castles is also a UNESCO approved world heritage site famous for its historical monuments. The mosaics at Madaba is a must visit destination for those interested in knowing about the Ottoman period. St. George’s Church houses a famous 6th century mosaic map, while the Madaba archaeological park preserves a number of recently discovered masterpieces including the fantastic mosaics from the Church of the Virgin and the Hippolytus Hall.

If you want to explore the natural side of Jordan, then visit Jordan’s largest nature reserve, Wadi Dana Biosphere reserve. The Dead Sea which is famous for being world’s oldest spa is popular for being the only sea where no one can sink. The Dead Sea’s saline water which have a salt content ten times higher than the Mediterranean and there are many luxurious resorts and spas located here. The Red Desert of Wadi Rum which offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Arabia is also a famous attraction.

Eating & Shopping

The Jordan cuisine is a perfect blend of Middle Eastern cuisine and a traditional platter, which is known as ‘mezze’, will include koubbamaqliya, labaneh, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, olives and pickles. Jordan is the largest producer of olive in the world; hence olive oil is the main cooking oil. The food in Jordan can be mild to extremely hot and spicy and herbs, garlic, spices, onion, tomato and lemon are generously used. Some of the best delicacies can be savoured during the Ramzan months.  Mansaf, which is the national dish of Jordan, should not be missed. In Jordanian cuisine, drinking coffee and tea flavored with na'na or meramiyyeh is almost a ritual. All the cities have numerous restaurants and high end hotels serving local as well as international cuisine.

Jordan is popular for its weaving and handloom industry along with decorates sand bottles and enchanting bric-a-bracs that represent the Arabic culture. All these stuffs are best available at the souvenir shops at Petra. There are numerous markets, local shops and handicraft villages across Jordan where tourists can shop for authentic local crafts.
