The mediaeval town of Óbidos is one of the most picturesque and well preserved in Portugal. Located about 20km's from the retreat, on high ground near the Atlantic coast, Óbidos was a strategic stronghold in the middle ages. Settlement dates back to before the Romans’ arrival on the Iberian Peninsula. It is a village built and preserved within castle walls: a maze of cobble streets with white-washed, flowered and well-kept houses and interesting shops. Rich in Manueline porticoes, the colourful window boxes and the small squares comprise fine examples of religious and civil architecture from the town’s golden days, providing a host of reasons for a day trip. History: When 13th-century Portuguese Queen Isabel passed through Obidos and marveled at its beauty, her husband King Dinis I simply gave it to her. For centuries after, the kings of Portugal followed suit, presenting the picturesque little town to their queens as wedding gifts. Hence, the moored village of Obidos is very popular with tourists, its hillside location offering amazing views of the surrounding landscape. The medieval castle is a main attraction, and you can walk along the top of the castle all round the village.

Perhaps the most visited historic site outside of Lisbon in Portugal, this charming walled medieval fortress city with its narrow, winding cobbled streets, quaint white-washed cottages surrounded by colourful bougainvillae and geraniums is the perfect living, working museum town. The whole complex, which is surrounded by steep 14th century granite walls, formed part of the wedding present of King Dinis to his wife Isabel of Aragon in 1282. The town also contains a lovely boutique hotel or pousada dating from the middle ages and a museum which tells the story of how this hilltop fortress was taken from the Moors by Portugal’s first king Afonso Henriques in 1148.
