About Khajuraho Temples:
These ancient Hindu and Jain temples are a true celebration of Indian craftsmanship. The Vindhya mountain range provides a beautiful backdrop against the rich architectural landscape.
The temples are classified into three groups: Eastern, Western and Southern. With all their marvellous beauty, it is no surprise that they have been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Built by the Chandela rulers between 950 and 1050 AD, the sculptures in these temples portray scenes from daily life, teachings and Kama Sutra.
These temples fell into neglect after the decline of the dynasty and were rediscovered much later in 1838 by a British army engineer, Captain T.S. Burt.
Till their rediscovery in 1838, they had remained hidden under dense date palm trees – and only 20 of the original 85 monuments survived. The town – Khajuraho- borrows its name for these date palm trees, Khajur as they are called in Hindi.
