When people think of Sariska, the first – and generally only – thing that comes to mind is its wildlife sanctuary. But Sariska is a hidden gem – and so are the secrets it holds. 1. Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary
Sariska’s forests may be known for their steadily growing population of Bengal tigers, but for nature-loving visitors, the sanctuary boasts an astonishingly broad range of wildlife. Here you can feast your eyes on Indian leopards, jackals, jungle cats, striped hyenas, various species of deer and monkeys, and wild boars. And if you’re a bird lover, this is winged heaven! Because the birds that inhabit Sariska are some of the rarest in the country.

2. Sariska Palace
Sariska isn’t a place one tours in a day. To truly appreciate all it contains, one must settle in for a while, and take their time to explore its corners. And where better to kick up your heels than the magnificent palace that was once home to the Maharajas of Alwar? The Sariska Palace is now arguably the best hotel in the area, retaining all its historical magnificence and charm.

3. Pandupol Temple
The hills surrounding Sariska hide more than one historical curiosity. Perhaps the best known of these is the Pandupol Hanuman Temple. Unquestionably picturesque, this little temple is nestled within the rocky hills, and comes with a waterfall attached! Pandupol will thrill you with its mythological connection to a bygone era – for this is the place where the Pandava Bhima was rumoured to have been defeated by Hanuman in a battle of strength.

4. Kankwadi
When in Rajasthan, you must expect to come face-to-face with a fort at some point, and Sariska doesn’t disappoint. The Kankwadi fort is located within the wildlife sanctuary, and is easily accessible by jeep, which makes it a convenient place to stop while you’re in the middle of your safari. A stunning edifice of golden stone, this fort was once a Mughal stronghold, used by Aurangzeb to imprison his brother, Dara Shikoh.

5. Bhangarh
The ruins of Bhangarh are not in Sariska proper, being located just at the edge of the sanctuary, but they are well worth a visit – or several. Here you may explore the ruins of buildings as lofty as palaces and havelis, and as humble as the shops frequented daily by the population of this once-thriving town.
