SAO PAULO INFORMATION GUIDE
Vibrant São Paulo is among the world's most populous cities. Brazil's financial center, it has abundant cultural institutions and a rich architectural tradition. Its iconic buildings range from the 1929 Edifício Martinelli skyscraper and the neo-Gothic Metropolitan Cathedral to modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer’s curvy Edifício Copan. The colonial-style Pátio do Colégio church marks where Jesuit priests founded the city in 1554.
Climate: The city has a humid subtropical climate and experiences four distinct seasons. In summer, the average temperature is about 28 °C (82 °F). In winter, temperatures tend to range between 11 and 23 °C (52 and 73 °F). Any time is a good time to visit the city.
Food:Gorge on local delicacies like Bocata de mortadela (local sandwich), Quibebe (dried beef stew and vegetables), Virado a paulista (rice, beans, fried plantain, pork and vegetables), Feijoada (mix of red and black beans with pork, usually served with rice), Codfish patties, Curau de milho (pudding made with grated corn and condensed milk), and Torta Paulista (cake).
Culture:The city has a multi ethnic and multi religious vibe. The inhabitants of the city are jovial and fun loving and celebrate the Carnival with pomp and splendour. Although not as grand as Rio de Janeiro’s, Sao Paulo's carnival is as colourful and fun. Colourful costumes, samba competitions, and glittering parades mark the event.
History and Architecture:The city was founded in 1554 by Jesuit priests on the banks of the Rio Tiete. The city grew prosperous thanks to coffee cultivation in the mid-19th century. The coffee plantation owners made heavy investments and attracted hordes of labour, leading to a dramatic rise in immigrant population. The city’s architecture has Victorian and modern elements. Victorian influences are seen in the mansions in Bela Vista and the train station Estação da Luz. Skyscrapers like the curving Edifício Copan are modern marvels. And Igreja de São Francisco de Assis is a Baroque Cathedral.
Shopping: On a trip to Sao Paulo, you can pick up religious antiques, soapstone carvings, leather goods and gemstone jewellery. For high end fashion, head to Jardins, Rua Augusta or Alameda Lorena. Or for more reasonable shopping, try out Rua 25 de Março. Or try out the Saturday market Feira do Bixiga for crafts, antiques, and clothing.
Sightseeing in Sao Paulo:Luisa Strina Gallery, Museu da Tatuagem (Museum of Tattooing). Salão De Festas (Capoeira school), Botanical Gardens, the Sao Paulo Zoo, rainforest in the Parque Siqueira Campos, and Praça da República are the chief attractions.
